MC won't play .avi movies
« on: May 31, 2004, 06:09:21 pm »

I had to reformat my computer and reinstall MC, upgrading from 9 to 10 in the process.
It now refuses to play .avi video files. The sound is there, but I get a black screen saying that MC cannot display visualisations for this file type.   :-[
Before reinstalling, I had no problem with the .avi files.

Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,
W.

You may need codecs to play avi files on Media Center.
First, play the avi file in windows media player so, that
Windows Media Player installs codecs.

Then, try playing avi files in MC.

you will just be missing some codecs.  Do a search for some codec packs.  (I use one called something like "Ace Mega Codec Pack").  One word of warning though - only install the codecs that you know you need - I made the mistake of installing them all once!

Matthews solution may be the better one - you only get the codecs you need that way :)

i would think MC should know if you need them if so then MC should provide a link or auto download the codecs much like windows media player.

Did you try updating MC?  You may have a version that has a bug.  We've changed the way we play AVI files a couple of times recently.

Try the latest version in one of the first threads above.

Where are these AVI's from? The ffdshow filter supports a lot of codec types, including DivX and Xvid. You can download it here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20020617.exe?download
It's generally a handy codec to have installed anyway
