I have an external 300 gig disk going into a high powered laptop running XP and Media Jukebox.  The output is taken as USB into a Creative Extigy player.  I am using .ape files.

I thought the sound was good and without interruptions, but when I got close to the speaker I noticed there were little "pops" in the music.  The placements of the pops was random so I figured it was a playback issue, not a recorded error.  Now I wonder about the quality of the music data stream in general - a pop means the whole system has completely failed at some point - the rest of the stream might be innaccurate but pop free.

What can we do on the PC platform to cleanup the signal?  Can Windows really produce a perfect signal for true high fidelity music playback?

Try ripping in secure mode to see if that makes a difference.

Switch playback in options to wav out or direct sound.

Sound card drivers can sometimes be a problem.

Problems related to Via chipsets are also a possibility.
