bug playing quicktime/m4a files
« on: June 09, 2004, 02:20:07 am »

I suspect MC10 (latest beta) may have some sort of timeout set wrong, i've been playing
apple lossless, m4a, albums and often after finishing one track, it'll skip past tracks, seeming to hesitate on the next  track briefly, showing the title of it, but then skipping to the next one, then perhaps skipping again till finally playing something. Seems like it tried to play it and gave up. However I then go and select the track it skipped and it'll play just fine. I might be wrong,
but my programmers intuition suspects its starting up quicktime and giving up too quickly (i'd even
had the skipped track start to play briefly before the switch to the one after, as if quicktime finally got to it but MC had already given up). I think (not positive) it was more common when i had ITunes running ripping CD in the background, chewing up CPU which would then make the quicktime start take more time.
I would be curious also if there are any plans to fix playing visualizations for quicktime format tracks so at least the track info plugins with things like lyrics, etc could show up, since obviously the tag editor reads the tags even if quicktime plays them, as does the basic display of the title, etc.  (i assume they allow lyrics, bio, coverart, etc, tags).

curiouslistener,

In regards to the skipping, what happens if you play the tracks in Quicktime? Do you see the same behavior?

playing back using ITunes doesn't seem to have the problem (though I may have just
gotten lucky, doesn't always happen even in MC which is what i've been using for playback).

curiouslistener,

Thanks for the update. If you see it again, try duplicating it directly in Quicktime and see what happens.

Thanks,

I'd been too busy to look into this more, but realized that the issue will
consistently arise in mini-me mode for some albums ripped by apple lossless,
even without heavy CPU use elsewhere (that was just an unusual circumstance at the time which i guess wasn't related). It'll work find in regular size, proceed to
the next track. but if i switch to mini-me mode (tried more than one skin, no difference), it'll skip over tracks consistently.
Now that i'm back trying to use the stuff i've been ripping, its rather frustrating since
i can't simply play an album in mini-me mode and know it won't be skipping tracks.

curiouslistener,

To summarize, you are reporting that when playing lossless m4a files in mini-me mode, tracks will skip? If so, when you play the exact same tracks in regular size you have verified that the tracks play fine? This seems bizarre, but if this is what you are seeing, I will check it out.

Thats exactly what is happening. eg, "Music from a Painted Cave", Robert Mirabal.
I can consistently go in normal to track 6, move the slider to 10 seconds
before the end. If I stay in normal mode it'll continue on and play track 7.
However if I instead switch to mini-me mode (using blade usually, but didnt' seem to make a difference what), it'll skip on to track 9 instead.
It is bizarre.

btw, I don't know if it depends on these exact files, but I figured I'd mention an
album there is a chance someone there might actually have, which has the problem.
Rush's "Test for Echo". At the end of track 3, in normal view it'll go to track 4, in
mini-me it'll flash the names of the next 2 tracks and then start playing track 6.  media center 10.0.146 under windows XP with latest updates installed, latest version of quicktime. Its  encoded without the cd error detection turned on in ITunes, stored in "Music\Rush\Test For Echo" with the file names being this format:

01 Test For Echo.m4a
02 Driven.m4a
03 Half The World.m4a
04 The Color Of Right.m4a
05 Time And Motion.m4a
06 Totem.m4a
07 Dog Years.m4a
08 Virtuality.m4a
09 Resist.m4a
10 Limbo.m4a
11 Carve Away The Stone.m4a

REM's Monster is another example, same thing, track 3 finishes, skips/flashes names of next two tracks in mini-me mode and then plays track 6. in normal mode it continues to track 4. (i hadn't bothered trying to find out % of albums that have it not wanting
to take time, might be all, don't know, been sticking to normal view)

curiouslistener,

I was able to duplicate this but do not have a fix yet. I will get to this asap, but it may be a little while until I have time.

Rest assured that you are not crazy, although the problem seems ridiculous.
