Media Center 11.0.6 Alpha (NOT RECOMMENDED)
« on: June 11, 2004, 11:41:01 am »

We're just starting work on Media Center 11.  From time to time, we'll share our progress.

Think of these early builds like the hole in the ground before you start building a house.  Much like the hole, it's hard to get excited about these builds, and if you're not careful with them, you'll get hurt.

The major changes so far are a rewritten database core and movement towards improved document handling.  Many more changes will come with time.  We're listening.

BACKUP YOUR LIBRARY BEFORE INSTALLING -- THE NEW DATABASE FORMAT IS CHANGING -- ANY ORGANIZATION YOU DO WILL PROBABLY BE LOST WITH FUTURE RELEASES

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110006.exe

11.0.6 (6/11/04)

1. Fixed: A few minor memory leaks with the new database core.
2. Fixed: Date field didn't account for the time zone on data files.
3. NEW: Added relational storage (memory and disk) for compressed and numeric fields. (was only for string fields before)
4. NEW: All database fields will use compression on large values. (instead of only certain fields)
5. NEW: Database lookups based on filename (or other fields) are much faster -- helping speed of import and some other tools.
6. NEW: Added "Documents" media mode.
7. NEW: When switching to a media mode that has no view schemes, the appropriate schemes from "browser (defaults).jmd" get merged in. (instead of creating only one item)
8. Changed: Flipped sort arrow drawing direction to be like Windows Explorer.
9. Fixed: Sorting by a column multiple times could leave that column in the "Customize View" sort list twice.
10. NEW: Added a database caching layer that makes a huge speed difference when returning to a view that's been built in the past.
11. Fixed: MC could be associated with files it couldn't natively play. (documents, exe, etc.)
12. Fixed: Playing data files would not launch the associated program on some systems.

Enjoy :)

After this is installed, it will not run till you delete rename the data folder.
After that you have to install the build again, then it will work..

If you installed the first alpha, erase the *.jmd files in your data directory.  Then restore your library from an MC 10 backup.

It's lookin good!!

If you make changes to alot of tags, MC will freeze for a few min, then you can see the Saving 1 of xx at the bottom Toolbar, This enables you to do other things, If you try and play a file, it will studder and not play till the tags are finished.

For PDF files, you cannot use Rename File from Properties.

I've made some requests in the past having to do with the nature of the Date field in the MC database.  The way that, due to the calculated nature of Date(Year), Date(Month) and Date(Day), importing new tag information often destroyed those variables in an entry.  Is it too early to ask that this be looked at in version 11 ?

Just gave it a try and it won't start till I remove the Data folder, If I do that then install it works.

It's probably a little early, but there is another thread here where you can say what you would like to see.

Thanks. I'm not sure I want to test whether it's fixed though :P

Have a great week end guys!

Forgive me if this has been mentioned in another thread:  Is the Media Server supposed to be working in this alpha release?

Let me know, so I stop worrying about it :)

drosoph,
Probably not because the database is changing.  Maybe in another week.

Is it possible to add .mdb and .mde to the Document handling?

These are Microsoft Access Databases.

Thanks,

Don't suppose you could save these executables as .zip files could you?

My firewall disallows downloading .exe files.

Many thanks
