Media Server 10 not working
« on: June 01, 2004, 10:17:04 pm »

I just upgraded from MC ver 9 to MC ver 10 and now I can't get the Media Server to work.  I have TiVo HMO w/TiVo Beacon service running just like before.  Is there something I'm missing with the new version?

What exactly doesn't work? Sending to TiVo? Sending to Media Center?

I'm guessing you are sending to TiVo. Make sure TiVo's beacon is running, or has been shut down cleanly (using "Stop" under "Services" in control panel-administrative tools).

Try opening Media Center (even on the same machine) and connecting
to Media Server. Does that work?

The Media Server just doesn't run.  I tried starting it from MC and from the Start Menu but neither seems to work.  I shut down the TiVo beacon and this had no effect.  What default port does it try to connect on?  I can check to see if it's a port problem.  Everything was working fine until the upgrade.

Media Server runs on port 80 by default.  When Media Server starts, it minimizes itself to the Task Bar in the lower right corner of the screen.  It's probably there.

I just checked and nothing else is using port 80.  I know that MS minimizes itself to the task bar normally, but it's not there.  When I try to execute it, it shows up briefly in Task Manager and then disappears.  I don't know what else to try.  I don't have the previous version or I would just switch back to that.

MS starts and minimises itself to the System Tray (the small area of icons just to the left of the clock on the Taskbar.

Under WinXP, all these icons are not always visible...you can click the little arrow thingy to the left of the System Tray to expose all the icons in there...

Are you sure it's not hiding in there somewhere? I run MS all the time, and it works flawlessly...

Also, it's worth having a look at the Application section of the Event Viewer (under Administrative Tools on WinXP)...

I checked the System Tray and it's not there.  It used to be there in ver 9.  I checked the Application log in Event Viewer and nothing is listed.  Is there anything I can look for in Task Manager that may give me a clue?  Some other diagnostic tool I should use?  Is there some sort of configuration file I can look at that MS uses?  Thanks.

Task Manager shows Media Server in the Applications tab.

Sounds like the installation is somehow corrupted. Have you tried re-installing MC10?

I've tried to completely uninstall and then reinstall and still no luck.  How can I get back my ver 9?  At least this worked, but  I don't have the ver 9 installation file any more.  I don't see any other choice.  I've basically paid for an upgrade that's taken me a step backward.

It's in the FAQ, near the top of this board.

williadt,

Did you try a full un-install, and then delete the entire C:\Program Files\J River directory??

Try that, it may fix things...
