Media Server Support of Sound Blaster Wireless Music?
« on: June 02, 2004, 03:15:41 pm »

I've finally found what I was looking for - Creative Labs Sound Blaster Wireless Music!  This thing is *exactly* what I wanted for remote music in my workshop.  I've got everything I need to make it work (200 GB mp3 and ape files, MC10 with Media Server running and working, wireless router, etc.).

I just need to know if Media Server will support the Wireless Music product.  I don't want to load yet another piece of software - I'd like to use what I already have and know works.  Anyone do this yet?  Any advice?

Thanks!

Media Server doesn't support it yet, but may soon.

So what about other similar products, then?

For instance, I've got the Netgear MP101 and a Philips Streamium mc-i250.

I've already got the mc-i250 hooking into MC nicely using my own code, but it'd be nicer if it was native :-)

Just picked one up yesterday.  Had a heck of time getting it to work, I had 128-WEP enables on my NetGear 634U Wireless Firewall Media Router.  It refused to work even thought I followed the instructions to a tee (if you used WEP you have to use Open authentication, and a number of other things).  Anyway I turned off WEP and enabled a MAC-based access control list at the router.

Anyway, the device itself is awesome.  I maintain a master high-bit library and a MP3 version of the same library in a parallel directory structure.  I had to use the Sound Blaster software to import the library, very easy, and that was it.  Works great, no hiccups and the RF remote with display works well even at a distance.  I use the digital TOSLINK output and it sounds great.

The software does have the idea of smartlists, but not nearly as flexible as Media Center.  Direct integration would be awesome.  Can't wait!

Ah... I hadn't noticed that there were threads elsewhere talking about the Netgear player. Looks like there has been some movement on getting uPnP support in Media Center - at least a little while back now - and both the Netgear MP101 and the Philips Streamium support uPnP, so that looks hopeful.

I don't know if the Creative Labs one even uses uPnP though...

UPnP is not yet enough of a standard that it will guarantee compatibility.  Each implementation is a little different.

sure, I saw that, but at least it must make it a *little* easier...

How do you enable the Sony support in MC anyway? I can't see an option for it anywhere... and nobody seemed to get an answer on the other threads that I could find.

Anyway, the device itself is awesome.
The upsides are obvious, any problems so far apart from setup?

Thanks!
