A CD device error ??
« on: November 10, 2002, 11:30:53 am »

When I start to burn a CD I get this message:
A device error occurred. Error number is 1051
Error data is: KEY: 5 ASC: 21 ASCQ: 2

It essentially goes through some burning and stops almost at the end with that message.
I already set the options to digital error correcting as suggested in the help menu.

Anyone out there have an answer?

Thanks

I am getting the exact same error:

A device error occurred. Error number is 1021
Error data is: KEY: 5 ASC: 21 ASCQ: 0

...only it occurs when first burning, at the point where writing first starts.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi AlPo,

Do you have the latest Adaptec ASPI installed ?

If so, try to uncheck "Use internal ASPI layer"  (MJ > Options > CD Writer Settings > CD Writer)

If not, first install it (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/suppdetail.html?sess=no&prodkey=ASPI-4.70), and try with this (as mentionned above)

I downloaded/installed Adaptec ASPI version 4.72, rebooted, tried again twice, and got the same error.

Anything I can try next?

The unusual thing is that when the first error occurred, I burned a data CD, and was burning a backup copy.  The first CD works fine, the second one failed.  I ran no other programs, was not connected to the internet, and did not close MJ between the two.

Sorry, I don"t see - but it's a registry entry error.

Does this occures since the MJ installation, or did it already worked fine ?

Maybe an Uninstall/Re-install could help
  • Backup your Licence and your Library
  • Uninstall MJ
  • Check your Registry and delete all J River keys from HKCU and HKLM
  • Re-Install MJ and retore your Licence and Library

Hope it solves your problem.

What I was trying to impart above is that I:

 1) Burned a data CD (worked fine)
 2) Burned a data CD (failed with error above)

I did nothing in between 1 and 2.

Where can I find out how to properly backup license and library?

Since the error described above, I have not been able to burn a CD.  Is my only option to delete / replace as you suggest?  Your response that "maybe" this would help does not exactly make me feel confident about the support suggestion.  I see other similar errors (see first post in this thread).  How were these customer's problems solved?

Other questions:
Why would it fail on a repeated operation that just completed successfully?

Why would it continue to fail?

Why would reinstalling help?

Also, if I am to do as you suggest, I need some direction as follows:

Backup your Licence and your Library--not sure how to do this
Uninstall MJ--can do this
Check your Registry and delete all J River keys from HKCU and HKLM--don't know how to do this
Re-Install MJ and retore your Licence and Library--not sure how to restore license and library

Thanks for the help.

Points 1, 2, 3 -> Microsoft Mysteries !!
  • Backup Licence : if you have a MJ8 Licence, no need to back it up - just go to Help > Registration Info and write down your registration code so you can Restore your Licence from the restore page (https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi) - also read this http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/buy_faq_8.html
  • Backup your library : MJ > File > Library > Library Manager - select your library  and click Backup (same place for the restore operation)
  • Registry : Start > Run > Regedit
    1. File > Export to a safe place (in case of mis-operation, you can re-import it)
    2. Expand the tree HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Softwares and right-click/delete the JRiver key (same for the tree HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE) then close the Registry

So : 1. Backup your Library
      2. Check your Licence (Registration Code)
      3. Uninstall MJ
      4. Edit your Registry
      5. Start a new installation and restore your library and your licence.

Hope I've been clear enough (c you tomorrow - here it's 03:37 AM and I need some rest)

Yves.

Just to let you know.
I downloaded a new driver as requested by MJ when trying to open the CD burning utility. The settings are:
unchecked the internal ASPI layer and digital unbuffered Copy Mode.
It works  :D perfectly (at least once so far).

Thanks

Glad it's working for you. You might want to switch that copy mode back to "Digital large buffer" since it has nothing to do with burning and will be much faster for ripping.
