Deskbar -- timed out?
« on: July 11, 2004, 06:08:32 pm »

Today, when I started my computer I got a messaed telling me J River Deskbar has timed out. It's really a shame 'cause I liked it alot.

So, J River, are you gonna put out a newer version or 1.06 without a timeouter? It would be really great.

Thanks,
Rasmus

Good to know - I was about to reinstall it with v.11.

I have to believe that the wise people of J River have to know that this is too good of a product to let it die.

2 small predictions from me

1- it will get rolled into the release of 11 and we won't see it again until 11 is beta

2- it will no longer be free - either with 11 or on it's own for a couple of bucks.

Not had that problem here but then I did only hibernate my PC yesterday and not shut it down...  Hope there will be a release version of this little gem.  I was even going to post some suggestions to add from a mac utility I saw that is very good but wasn't sure if development was still happening.  In its current version it is still a little unstable so I would probably not pay for it as it i but a stable release version I would defo consider parting with a few dollars for.

We weren't sure if anyone was using the Deskbar.

Look for an updated version sometime in the next few days.

Thanks everyone.

This might be a case where it worked so well and did so  much more than expected that we couldn't come up with our usual list of 'suggestions'.

Or it could be that few of us are using it.  I know that I'm always reminding myself to use it a minute after I already did what I needed to do either in my browser or inside MC.....

Good to hear...  I love the deskbar.  I even got a few other people interested only they were iTunes users and so couldn't use the playing now features.

My suggestions are to make it work in a similar way to this program:

http://www.obdev.at/products/launchbar/

It is Mac OS X only but is also similar to the search light features apple are incorporating into tiger, the next version of OS X.  Basicallly it works in a very similar way to deskbar but takes things a little further. If you are searching for a song, for example, you type in the artist and it then lists all their songs to choose from.  If you are looking for a word doc, type in the title and it appears.

It works for everything.  Inernet history, application launch it is very powerful.  There is nothing like this on the PC so I think you could have something very special on your hands.  And lets face it longhorn is not going to introduce search facilities into explorer for at least two years!!

If made right, Adam's (or LauchBar's) concept could be very powerful and useful. But it would have to be made right. Very logical with user limitation (ie easy way to only search for document or songs.)
  A result-list would be nice.

I hope this is coming soon!!  It's funny how quickly you get used to something like that.

Please re-release 1.06 w/o the timeout feature!

The new version will have a small price.  Your suggestions for a price are welcome (except $0 suggestions).

The deskbar is a clear point of differentiation against the competition.

Bundle it separately and charge for it and you'll lose that benefit.

With it crashing a little, and the play not exactly working all the time, I'd not part with cash just yet, but when its stable, and has a way to launch a playlist from the play command I'd probably spare $5 for it!

I've been using the deskbar since its first release, but it is in desperate need a of further development (ie the Playing Now bug). There would have to be some serious improvements as well as new features to justify any price.
