MC11 Stability Problem
« on: August 31, 2004, 04:30:36 am »

[split from bug thread by JimH]

Version 11.0.72 is very unstable and crashes every few minutes, sometimes during ripping, sometime during media library handling, sometimes during playback of music.

Any third party plug-ins?  A similar problem with audioscrobbler was reported.

Reboot?  Reinstall?

Jim,

did a complete new install with 11.0.64 and just upgraded to 68, 70, 72. No 3rd party plugins right now. Did a reboot, same problem.

I do a lot of work right now, importing cover art from scanner, adding cover art, plenty of library functions, renaming etc, while playing music sometimes and sometimes not. It just happens randomly about every 5-10 minutes. Will try to make a screenshot next time it happens.

I am running on XP-SP2, ZoneAlarm Pro, BDE Antivir, Spybot. Nothing else special.

Jaguu,
Try simplifying your system.  I don't think MC has a stability problem at this point.

I have had a few random crashes, can't seem to pin it on anything yet though.
for example, I left MC playing music while I fell asleep lat night, girder was set to terminate it and when I woke up MC had crashed.
I have re-installed build 70 (becuase of the () problem Jaguu has mentioned and Theatre view bugs) so I can't do any more testing at the moment.

Monkeyboy,
Are you running any of these?

just xp-sp2
you have convinced me to fiddle some more  :)
I have re-installed 72

just a little bug I have found, If you press ctrl 3 to go into window mode, then press ctrl 1 to go back to standard, the "Media Center Display" tab is still present and doesn't go until you close and re-open MC.

Another issue that has cropped up recently (one of the last few builds rather than the latest)
If MC is set to "start playing current playlist" on startup and the first file is a video, MC freezes on startup. you have to manually edit the registry to get out of this.

I've only had crashes while trying to sync with the iPod but Steve said he was rewriting the iPod plugin and it would be fixed sooner or later. I haven't had any other problems (other than of course audio scrobbler and EC)

MC 11.0.72 crashed at least 3 times today during ripping. It simply disappears from the screen. And when you restart the ripping processes, it doesn't recognize what was already ripped and starts from the beginning again.

Yesterday I upgraded Easy CD Creator to the latest version (5.3.5) and deintalled and reinstalled BackupMyPC 4.85. That were the only changes the last few days.

I, too, have had MC "dissappear" on me once or twice...

I also have XP SP2 installed.

One possibly unrelated thing; I also use a piece of software called Visual Pinball/VPinMAME (a pinball machine emulator ala MAME - excellent piece of software if, like me, you're a pinball head from way back...). There has been quite a bit of discussion on their forums recently about the fact that, with XP SP2 installed, the program will not exit cleanly EVER. ie. it crashes everytime you try to exit the current pinball table, and load a new one.

Same problem here, MC11 crashes on most attempts to rip, so I use external ripper (EAC).

I also noticed some strange behaviours if I use the bracket signs "(" or ")" on tag editing, then MC11 switches to another view, like form ALbum/Artist to Composer/Band etc.. Very odd indeed. ONly notice this bug since version 11.0.72

What do you rip to?  MP3?

What happens if you switch to APE or WAV?

That's a known bug that'll be fixed next build.

MC11 still crashing every few minutes while tagging

Due to some instability of the system, I did a fresh install of WXP-SP2 and have hardly half a dozen of the vital applications right now installed including the newest Nvidia video driver downloaded from Windows Update, so I would call my system pretty virgin.

I am tagging quite a number of images and 11.0.75 still crashes every few minutes. I get the Microsoft error reporting screen and then MC11 disappears from the screen without saving the last few tag changes. So please give some more attention to this instability.

After the last crash I could not even start MC11 any longer, although it did not appear inside the Task Manager. Had to reboot the system and the system hat to forcefully kill some hidden MC process.

It seems that the crashing happens at quite regular intervals, mostly during tagging operations.

Was away for lunch leaving MC11 running. When I came back I found the Microsoft error reporting screen again. So it had crashed just by remaining idle.
