License Expired
« on: July 07, 2004, 11:30:58 pm »

Can anyone shed light on why my MC10 license has expired.

I recently had to install a new motherboard (same exact model) in my server and update its BIOS, which reset the CMOS clock to 2002. At one point during my hardware upgrade I declined to auto update MC to the latest version - as there were too many other issues to contend with. There have been no other changes in the hardware configuration.

Now when I launch MC, I get the pop-up that indicates that my trial period is over. Predictably, when I try to use my original .mjr license from April 11th it indicates that it has expired.

I really don't want to use up one of the limited number of licenses that are issued per year on this - and I don't think that I should have to.

Can someone from JRiver please provide some guidance.

Thanks

read the FAQ

the license file is only good for 14 days they time out.

you need to go to the restore page and get a new license file to restore your MC.

make sure your date is correct.

Thanks Sparta.

I have read the FAQ many times. My question was

1. Why did my license expire?

and

2. Why must I diminish my limited number of restores to get it working again?

Thanks

The mjr file is an "Install Key".  It is only good for 2 weeks.  After that, you need to use your "Registration Code" (check e-mail from buy-button@jriver.com or have it e-mailed to you again) to restore.  There is a link to the restore page in the FAQ.

maybe many reasons that can not be explaind.

Nor I am sure will J river talk about anything dealing with the way the license key works.

But a Bios change could be one reason.

Make sure your date is correct and then restore.  That's what restores are for.

Well I must be missing the point of something here. I bought and piad for JRiver Media Centre on 20th May this year and have happily been using it daily.

Now today I go to start it up and it tells me my licence has expired ??

Nothing to do with any 14 day expiry period or other such rubbish, nothing new installed on my PC and no changes since I used it yesterday.

So I have the same question as the original poster. Why did my licence expire after less than a month (and more than 14 days :p) ?

I have used the restore option and am now back to a functioning Media Centre.

I had already ready your message 3 which doesn't answer the question posed, since if you read my message nothing has changed from the working day to the none working day.

I'm not asking J River to talk about the way the licence key works.

I'm asking why the product I have paid for decided for no reason that maybe it wasn't actually registered and paid for after all. Can I expect this to happen again, is it a known bug etc. etc. ?

normaly it happens if the computer name changes

there was a few programs also that would cause this.

It is hard to say what it would be since we don't have your computer in front of us or J river.

If you do a search in the past 600 days you may find the program name that did this, i forget what one it was.

If we knew the answer, we would tell you.  I don't.

We've seen more than the usual number of license problems lately.  That tends to happen when something major changes (new version of Windows, for example).

Changing your date a lot on your PC _could_ be the source.  KingSparta was also referring to another case that turned out to be related to software that automatically changed the machine name when moving a laptop from home to office and back.  That caused a similar problem.

Thank you for the last two posts expanding on some of the possible causes.

This happens to me incessantly since I upgraded to MC 10 and it's very annoying. . .  however I have noticed that if I close the window and restart MC I am still regiestered. . . I never have to actually restore my regkey. .

I wonder if it could be some security software causing problems.

Sorry not to have the culprit, but I have several apps here that suddenly become unregistered. Take a look in your event logs. Look at System. Do you have any entries saying the registry could not be saved because a program had it open while the system was shutting down? I see those from time to time and nearly always have to re-register several apps.
For my system, it was Outpost Firewall that held the registry open.

Ok. I didn't enjoy this the first time it happened - and I'm absolutely not enjoying it now.

Although I solved the registration/licensing problems described at the top of this thread - tonight, I had to reload the chipset NIC drivers for my server and I am once again faced with an unlicensed copy of Media Center. For the record, I uninstalled the NIC drivers before re-installing  -  and only updated the chipset drivers (without uninstalling first).

This new problem, along with the original problem which seemed to be caused by installing an exact replica of a failed motherboard, suggests to me that the MC license intentionally, or unintentionally, "breaks" when certain system components in the computer are replaced - or when their drivers are reinstalled. This seems very much like the hardware-based authentication process that Windows uses.

Whatever the explanation is, and regardless of whether or not it is intentional, I am becoming somewhat agitated, and frankly very concerned, that I am using up my allotted licenses unnecessarily, and that I will not have any available licenses later this year to apply to new machines that I plan to purchase.

JimH, I would very much appreciate some feedback on this topic as I am a loyal customer who is blowing through licenses at an alarming rate just to maintain my current system.

if asked in the past with a short discription on what happen, J river can and has re-set the users restores

I would not lose any sleep over it.

I don't know why you're seeing this problem.  It isn't normal.
