trees and panes
« on: August 06, 2004, 08:56:06 am »

this is a problem. you can't combine the two. this is just silly.

panes: less clutter, less view schemes, easier access, bypass, etc.
tree/theater:more clutter, more view schemes, harder access, no bypass.

anyone see a difference here? you need a bypass in theater view to make it usable. It's hard to find anything you want to play.

same thing goes for filename (loc). a tree in itself in a pane would work best.

anyone have any ideas?

sorry if I don't make any sense or what not. I haven't been myself lately and things are just going for the worse.

I'm not sure how panes would fit in theater view.  Remember that it needs to work on resolutions like 640 x 480.

Any cool ideas?

i dont think we need panes in hairstyle - just need a way to bypass options. How about an artificially inserted 'skip this option' or 'all values' item that is inserted at the top so we can move onto the next option without having to select a value for each?

That's a really great idea guys.  Look for it in the next build of MC 11.

Thanks :)

thanks matt. much appreciated.

how about the other idea I had concerning file (loc)?

I remember back when panes were first introduced, everyone was complaining about location. that's why (I think) you guys put back the tree (pop) along with the panes.

if you go by tree, you lose the panes and everything in the view scheme for selecting items. even though those items come next in line in the tree I think it would be faster if the tree was in the pane.

right now, it works as double-clicking the folder to go to the next. I'm more of an explorer type and like to see what I'm going through.

Anyway, I thought when you were bringing the tree back, it would be inside. Same thing for playlist groups. I would have to draw a picture to show what I'm getting at but here's a little something:

Filename (loc) | Artist | Album
---------------------------------------
±Parent Directory
.+Folder
..Sub Directories
.+Folder
..Sub Directories
etc

then ctrl click could work for multiple directories that are not in the same directory. everything in mc goes by the tree. action window / playlists, media library tree itself. This would keep those things consistent.

I would fine this to be much faster. Currently (in 11), filename (loc) loses it's folders once you click around a few times in it but I'm sure that will be fixed one way or the other.

could this be extended to 'quick play' as well as hairstyle?

I agree that putting a tree in the panes could be nice for some things.

However, it hasn't been a high priority because only a few view scheme types could take advantage of it.

Still, it's something we'd like to do someday.

Thanks again.

Trees would be really nice in panes for tagging photos.

Right now my 'persons' list goes crazy, if we could have trees then i could create groups so I could have 'family' - then put all my family members in it, 'friends' all my friends in it, etc - trees in the panes for tagging would be perfect for this

It's all the same system, so the change will show up everywhere.

Many moons ago I made a suggestion to have an option in a view scheme to decide whether we would like to have this view scheme in theater view or not. This would  give us the great advantage that we could have only selected view schemes displayed in theater view. Right now the system is too rigid as we have a number of view schemes that are there only for organisational purposes and don't need to be displayed in theater view.

This would really allow to have some simple configuration for theater view. Just make a simple option for every view scheme.
