Modifying cid

Have been trying to update the cid (Content ID) tag but can't get anything to appear in MC. Used other external editors to add the cid , ctype, etc but MC doesn't seem to acknowledge it. What's it there for?
I require it to remapp a UID (Unique ID) to MC Content ID.
Anyone?  :'(
