buffering when streaming via media server
« on: August 13, 2004, 09:43:03 am »

I'm trying to access my media server (not media central) at home over the internet from work.

Most of my files are between 128 and 196 or VBR mp3s. However, I can't get through a single song without having to buffer in the middle.

I've only got a max 256 upload speed through my ISP. I've used a download speed tool to confirm I get about 220 kbps from my server.

Are there any settings that can help get everything to stream without buffering?

Are you getting a consistent 220K? If anyone else hits your server, you'll be sharing your bandwidth with them, this could cause the slowdown.

I'm the only one that knows the address. 220 is the minimum I've observed. It's usually 235-245, so I can't understand why I can't stream 196kbps MP3's especially since buffering should get me past any intermittent slowdowns.
