Media Center 11 Server Problem
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:22:43 am »

I have MC11 set up at home. Files are ripped in ape format high.

I am able to connect to server from other computers and from wireless at home. Everything works.

I am finally trying to hook up from work. I enter my ip and it logs in
great with the password, downloads media library files perfect, displays songs and when I select a song then display go to waiting for file. It goes
through a couple songs on list without playing saying waiting and then
I get an error message.

check your firewall (both at home and at work). It may be preventing the data transfer.

Hi John,

I'm not sure how to even check what you are recommending.

I am using a wireless g router at home. I have the router to port forward to 80 on the computer ip. maybe something wrong with that?

Its downloading the library file, why would it not the song?

Firewalls can be pretty smart. You may have a firewall at work that prevents transfer of files. Since it works at home, this is pretty likely. One way to test this is to try to access your home server from somewhere else (a friends house?) to see if that works.

John,

Does it make sense that I am able to download the library but not the song? I would assume if its a firewall issue then it would not download the library.

I also dont think we have any special firewall at work.

Thanks for your help,
Anthony

The error message come up while trying to load song. here it is

Media center encountered errors while trying to play last several files

Error: Unknown Error

Please make sure that path in your media library points to the right location

It could be a firewall set to filter mp3s but not zips.

Can you post the error messages on the server?
They are in settings->show status.

Also check the logs on your router, see if it is not forwarding the packet on.

Hey John,

Ok, I had my wife try from work. She was actually able to log on and get music to start so obviously my problem is here at my work.

She did have a problem with the music starting and then buffering right away. My files are stored rather large at ape high. How can I get the server to distribute files on smaller size? Is this even possible?

Thanks,

Anthony

Glad it works. Let us know if you figure out what was going wrong.

APE is terrible for streaming. Make a copy of your library, convert it to MP3s and stream those instead.

Got It,

Thanks John, that kinda what I was figuring out after searching.

Looks like I should use OGG Vorbis. Any advice on Quality setting for
streaming?

Thanks Alot.

Go to Library Manager.

Set up a new library.  Call it something like "Remote Use".    Choose the option to "clone" from your default.

You now have an identical library.  Change the default location for encoding to a different one.  C:\music2, for example.  This way, converted files will be put in a new directory.

Choose a few files and convert them to 128Kbps MP3 or to VBR MP3.  Make sure you don't delete the original files in the process.  Try playing them remotely.

Because bandwidth will vary in your office, try them several times, at different times of day, before converting more files.

Good luck.

Jim,

Thanks for the advice. I have done all that you advised. Worked like a charm. I coverted all my ape to vbr mp3's.  I am able to listen remote without a skip. Although, with my wife and I both remote at the same time we do get some skipping and buffering. To be expected...

Ok, I have started ripping again to music2 in ape. This shows up in my
remote use library too as an ape file. So I will convert those too.

How do I move all my music2 files to orginal location?

Thanks
