I fixed the link.  It's the forum software.  You sometimes need to add a [ url ] and [ /url ] around a link (without the spaces) to get it to work.

I live on the East coast of Florida between West Palm Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.  The doppler radar showed the outter SE bands of the hurricane were about 5 miles North of us but THANK GOD we didn't even get a drop of rain and we only had mild winds.

Maybe I've told this story here before, but when I was young, my girlfriend's brother was home alone when a hurricane struck in Corpus Christi, Texas.  He pulled his parents' new car out of the garage and put his old car in.

When it came, the hurricane leveled the garage, squashed his car, and left the parents' car untouched.

We got lucky, yesterday. I live on the east side of Tampa Bay. If it it had continued on its path we would have been on the dirty side of the storm, and if it had turned a little less the eye would have passed over the top of us. Luckily it made landfall at about the best place it could have, based on population. Doesn't make it any easier on those affected by Charlie, but it could have been so much worse.

I know Ive said this before but this kind of thing makes me grateful that I live somewhere where the worst the weather is likely to do is to get you a bit wet. Sympathy for those who have lost so much.

Anyone have any broken windows yet from Charley?

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=1&u=/nm/20040813/ts_nm/weather_charley_dc

I just moved to Wilmington, NC as my job has relocated here. I got here on 8/8 and received one hell of a welcome by Charlie on Saturday. We were let go from our job early Saturday morning around 9:30 am and it was raining pretty good but I figured I would drive to the Supermarket to get some necessities.. BIG MISTAKE!! While I was in there they announced that the store was closing early. I bought what I needed and then went out to get to my car. It was raining so hard that I couldn't even see my car, Iwas totally and I mean TOTALLY soaked. The rain was up to my ankles and when I finally found the car (I parked it in front of the place but in my stupidity I forgot!) I started packing everything right away and then got into my car and it was like I had gone into a shower with my clothes on, a lot of pix and things in my wallet got ruined. I've seen hard rains before but I have NEVER experienced anything like this, I finally got to my home and then the HEAVY winds started. I got there in time to hear a loud crack and then the tree in front of the house split and came down. What a hell of a welcome to this area  :o
