Transition from plastic to digital
« on: August 15, 2004, 10:34:48 am »

I wonder if you could help us put together a list of major music retailers of CD's.

Here's a start:

U.S. - Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-mart, Amazon

England - HMV, Virgin

France - FNAC, Carrefour

Where do you buy CD's?  Who would you expect to sell digital downloads?

Thanks for your help.

Major retailers for UK should include:
W H Smith
Woolworths
Tower Records

There is also a 'Club' called 'Britannia Music'.  You subscribe to a music category and if you do not cancel it the send you a monthly recommended recording.  They also send you a monthly magazine covering all types of music.

Also the major supermarkets:
Sainsbury's
Tesco's
ASDA (Owned by Wall Mart)

I buy most of my CD's from Amazon and the Britannia Club these days but still use Smith's and Woolworths if something catches my eye.

All the above would be big enough to do music download services but will not get any custom from me unless it's lossless! (long live APE)

Hope this is of help.

In the UK,

www.cd-wow.com
www.play.com

are very popular. I get most of my CD's from them.

Canada: Best Buy, Wal Mart, Zellers (soon to be Target, eh?), Future Shop, Virgin, HMV, CDPLUS.COM (it's a real outlet not a web site), A&B Sound...I think that's it for the big boys.

In the UK:

MVC - I haven't used them in a while, but it looks like they're going digital.
