MC11 & TiVo
« on: August 21, 2004, 09:31:10 pm »

Evaluating, likely to buy but ... have not managed to get a certain radio station to stream to my TiVo - main reason for considering this product.

Loaded MC11 today, and it at least reliably plays the stream (MC10 did not) - even though the media type is identified as wmv not wma.

Problem is, I cannot get Media Server to expose itself to TiVo.
It's configured the same as MS10 was, but never gives the TiVo HTTP ready message in the status.

Any ideas anyone ?  I've seen bug reports for MC11 related to TiVo, so I realize this must be a local issue.

Check your Media Server settings to make sure you have the TiVo sharing turned on.  Check the port you're sharing on.

Configured same as MC10, which was charing just fine (though not streaming the station in question).
So TiVo configured on the suggested port, same as MC10 - in MC10 I get a line in the status of MS related to TiVo - not for 11.

Can you screen capture your Media Server setting ? So we can see what you've got set?

Also, have you tried to just plug the IP of your Server into TiVo to see if it would work directly vs. discovery ?

Not sure how to include that in a post ??

It's simple though, defaults in the TiVo screen (8079) with Beacon as the port.  Support all formats checked.

The status I get when I share does not mention the TiVo HTTP as it did in the MC10 Media Server - I assume it should ?!

(Let me know how/where to put the screen capture if necessary).

Thanks!

Build of MS is 11.0.13 BTW, and just noticed that whatever I set the TiVo port to, it always shows <machine IP>:80 in the titlebar (I assume this is for the 'native' sharing).

Restart Media Server without exiting. Look in the status window for an error message about "can't find database". Let me know...

By which you mean 'Stop sharing' and then 'Share' - just checking I am doing exactly what you intend.

I get a clean end to sharing, and a clean restart - no errors (I did this a couple of times - when I'm home I could get the exact messages, but they're just the normal starting messages).

It should mention the "TiVo HTTP ready for connections". If you aren't seeing this, it probably is your configuration. I know you've checked, but take another look. I don't see any way for the message not to appear unless an error shows up.

Reread all the instructions, just to summarize:

TiVo Desktop installed.
Beacon running.
TiVo HMO tab configured (either 8079 or 80).
Nothing ever mentioned abou TiVo in the Status.

So is there a dependency which could be missing ?

BTW:  Back rev to MC10 and this works fine (i.e. TiVo sees the machine, and can play music, just can't play the radio station in question).  Is there ANYTHING which is supposed to be different in the v11 configuration - because if I got it right in MC10 (it worked) then I have it ready in 11.

Only thing I'm wondering (did not affect MC10)...  I have the D5 Stream server installed on both machines.  If this is running, then Media server thinks it(self) is running when I try to start it.  With MC10 this was not an issue, close the D5 server and Media Server would start fine.  Now as Media Server is starting, it's just the TiVo bit which is not working, I assume this to be unrelated - but who knows.  I have tried rebooting with D5 no longer in the Startup folder, and then running MC10, then starting Media Server - same behavior.

No ideas at this point. Do you have the latest version of 11? Post your system info here.

Exit media server, and do a netstat -an in a command window. Look for stuff running on port 80 or 8079.

Thanks for trying to find the cause - already check netstat, nothing hanging on to those ports.  So frustrating - esp. with 10 working, I'd have written this off a while ago if it wasn't so tantilizingly close.

Will post system info. here later tonight.

BTW:  The station I am trying to listen to is identified as WMV by MC11 (and 10 for that matter) - how do I convince MC it is not a video stream, just audio ?

Inside Media Center, run the library manager and see where it thinks the database is.

Using windows explorer, make sure there is a database at that location.

In Media Server, make sure the proper database is chosen.

Yep, tried that as best I could.  The 'database' is a collection of jmd's - right ?

Remember MC sees this fine and it works, just fine - so the library is there - I go in to Library manager select a library and 'load' it - then play tracks from the resultant load.

In MS I select the library by name - and get the error in question when the server is restarted.

I could not find a file with the library name as part of the file name - but as I say MC is happy - so I assume this to be normal.

Correctly opens library now - and thus TiVo HTTP comes up.
Good step forward.  Thanks.

Still can't play station as the Playlist with the station does not show up - probably because the media type is WMV - how do I hack this to WMA as the playlist interface does not allow me to change it.

Nige ...

Don't worry, figured it out (export in MPL, edit, re-import).

Thanks for the efforts to resolve, and getting some kind of fix into the new build - must be time to buy now.
