Help with Filename path sorting
« on: August 30, 2004, 10:41:42 am »

OK, this has been bothering me for some time now and today I decided to take action. I am trying to achieve something very simple.
Here goes.

I have multiple cd albums in the form of
\my music\artist\album\cdXX\track # - artist - name
When I chose to view the album it is sorted like all
track 1's
track 2's
track 3's

not in the form of
cd1 track 1
cd1 track 2
...
cd2 track 1
cd2 track 2

which is how I want it.
I know this can sorted by having the album tag to contain the cd number but I don't want this.
I have tried customise current view...
and in sorting put
filename (path)
track #

which I thought would sort in the way I want, but it doesn't (same as above)
I am guessing I can't be the only one who wants this view so can someone lend a hand please (I reckon the answer is very simple  :))
Cheers,
Rich

edit: when I click on the filname column it sorts into the order I want.

I use this system:

First I add CD1, CD2, etc in the Comment field. You could also make a custom tag for CD numbers.
Album tag is always the plain album name.

Then I rename files from properties (MC Library Tool) like this:
\Music\Artist\Album\CD1 - Track # - Name.xyz
\Music\Artist\Album\CD2 - Track # - Name.xyz

or for various artists albums:
\Music\Album\CD 1 - Track # - Artist - Name.xyz
\Music\Album\CD 2 - Track # - Artist - Name.xyz

I don't keep unnecessary information in the filenames if the folder path already includes that information.
I like to keep the original track numbers in the filenames, because after renaming the files I fill track numbers from list order. (MC Library Tool)

If I have:
Album X, CD 1, 15 tracks
Album X, CD 2, 12 tracks
Album X, CD 3, 18 tracks

They become:
Album X, 45 tracks

Comment field still includes CD numbers and if I ever need original track numbers I can find them in the filenames.

I thought there would be an easier way to do this as all the information needed is there.
I have quiet a lot of albums like this and haven't got time to be adding comments and re-arranging files.
Thing is, when I click on the filename column it orders exacly how I want. So why does it do this when I have filename in the sort by... box

I dont have an equivalent structure to test. What happens if you customise the view to just sort by filename (and not track # as well)?

I see what the problem is now.
I'm not sure you could call this a bug, but I will  :)

If you just click on a view scheme and look down the list of songs, the sort by.. is honoured as specified.
But if you click on an album in the top pane for example (genre, rating whatever) the sorting order goes out the window.

I like to have Artist, Album panes in the view scheme, then browse the album column to find an album. When clicking on an album to look at the tracks, the sort by.. I specified is not honored.

Are you sure you haven't just got the sort order the wrong way? I think you need:

track #
filename (path)

not

filename (path)
track #

That does exactly the same for me.

It seems that the sorting criteria are honored but there is an invisible track # at the top of the list.
I have tried quiet a lot now, genre, duration, bitrate etc..

for example, if I use duration, they are sorted like
shortest track 1
next shortest track 1

not in the order of
shortest track
next shortest track

Where the track number doesn't come into the equation.
I am thinking that J River has put this in so that it makes the list look tidier when there are other sorting criteria
