OT: Your favorite lyrics? ...here's mine...
« on: September 02, 2004, 07:05:22 pm »

I don't look like no swishy little John Travolta pretty movie makin ladies boy
I don't tease up no cute kind of pencil thin mustache and tweak out my brows and nose hairs
I got a kisser like a rhino...they give me room at the toughest bars
I got veins in my face like a wino...I've got alots of cuts and scars
See I'm ugly...I'm talkin hatchet faced puffy lipped zit squeezin...offensive...down from the cement
shoulders to the bashed up gutter cut knees...ugly
I got hair on my back like a warthog...got a head like a slab of beef...got teeth
out my mouth like a bulldog...I got leathery gums underneath...I'm real ugly
I'm talkin flat out scare me a buzzard off a gut wagon...down from the craggy chin to
   the callous covered athlete's feet...ugly
Wear stomp in the park on a Sunday...mothers cover up their baby's eyes...when I crash
on into the cafe...people choke on their cottage fries...cuz I'm ugly
I don't bother getting all decked out in no nifty continental suit
I don't bother dragging me no bristle brush across my unruly waxy hair...what's the use?
You might be walking your delicate honey down a moonlit path one nite and watch a scunch up dainty little
baby doll face and watch her bleached out hair turn white...that's me she's lookin at
I ain't got no need for small talk...I ain't got no autographed house...no valentines
jammed up my mailbox...no pesky friends around...see I'm ugly
I'm talkin hatchet faced puffy lipped zit squeezin...offensive...down from the cement
shoulders to the bashed up gutter cut knees...UGLY!

Anna Begins, Counting Crows

My friend assures me, "it's all or nothing" / I am not worried, I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me, "for one time only, make an exception." I am not not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies, Send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried - I am not overly concerned
with the status of my emotions "oh", She says, "you're changing."
But we're always changing / It does not bother me to say this isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
and I guess I'm going to have to live with that but I'm sure there's something in a shade of gray or something in between
and I can always change my name if that's what you mean
My friend assures me "it's all or nothing" But I am not really worried, I am not overly concerned
You try to tell yourself the things you try tell yourself to make yourself forget, to make yourself forget I am not worried
"If it's love" she said, "then we're gonna have to think about the consequences"
cause she can't stop shaking and I can't stop touching her and.....
This time when kindness falls like rain, it washes her away and Anna begins to change her mind
"these seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering for days" she says.
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing / But I'm not gonna break
And I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not gonna bend. And I'm not gonna break and
I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say "as long as this is love..."
But it's not all that easy so maybe I should just, snap her up in a butterfly net / Pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried / I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences / Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room and...
The time when kindness falls like rain it washes me away and Anna begins change my mind
And every time she sneezes I believe it's love and oh lord.... I'm not ready for this sort of thing
She's talking in her sleep-it's keeping me awake and Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand and oh lord. I'm not ready for this sort of thing
Her kindness bangs a gong, It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away
It's chasing me away. She dissappears, and oh lord I'm not ready for this sort of thing

Not sure if it's my favorite, But this was the first that came to mind...

I was the boy who said all of my prayers
Laid my clean face on the pillow
Tucked in real tight, so safe and secure
Through the night
I heard a noise, it was probably nothing
It pulled me right out of a dream
If I knew it was you
I'd have jumped out of bed with a scream

I am the one who growls in your closet
I am the one who lives under your bed

Get down - back where you started
Get down - back into hell
Your black soul, you know you're
black hearted
I smell your sulfurous smell

All of my things that I play with in daylight
You turn into monsters at night
My toys were my friends
Until you taught them all how to bite

You showed me things little boys
shouldn't see
You scared me with visions of fire
You danced on my bed
With the flames on your head dancing higher

I am the one who growls in your closet
I am the one who lives under your bed

Get down - back where you started
Get down - back into hell
Your black soul, you know you're
black hearted
I smell your sulfurous smell

I tell ya right now
I don't want your reptile embrace
I don't want to follow you down
to your place
I don't want to be a child of disgrace
You can take your whiskey soaked, foaming
at the mouth, toilet talking, pea soup
spewing, sweating blood demon breath out
of my face

Get down - back where you started
Get down - back into hell
Your black soul, you know you're
black hearted
I smell your sulfurous smell

I was the boy who said all of my prayers
Laid my clean face on the pillow
Tucked in real tight, so safe and secure
Through the night

How can I explain
When there are few words I can choose
How can I explain
When words get broken

Do you remember!
There was a time ahaha
When people on the street
Were walking hand in hand in hand
They used to talk about the weather
Making plans together
Days would last forever

Come to me, cover me, hold me
Together we'll break these chains of love
Don't give up, don't give up
Together with me and my baby
Break the chains of love

Do you remember
Once upon a time ahaha
When there were open doors
An invitation to the world
We were falling in and out with lovers
Looking out for others
Our sisters and our brothers

Come to me, cover me, hold me
Together we'll break these chains of love
Don't give up, don't give up
Together with me and my baby
Break the chains of love
Together we'll break these chains of love

How can I explain
When there are few words I can choose
How can I explain
When words get broken

We used to talk about the weather
Making plans together
Days would last forever

Come to me, cover me, hold me
Together we'll break these chains of love
Don't give up, don't give up
Together with me and my baby
Break the chains of love
Together we'll break these chains of love

Poster at Bud's Ice Cream, 24th and Castro, 1971.

[picture of nice looking youngish swami in state of rapture]

"Who is Maher Baba?"

Scrawled handwritten response:

"He is but one manifestation of the divine essence in each of us."

Another response:

"Don't follow leaders, watch the parking meters.   -- Bob Dylan".

Hot Fudge Sundae, $1.75.  Full tilt bliss.

On promenades where drunks propose to lonely arcade mannequins
Where ceremonies pause at the jeweller's shop display
Feigning casual silence in strained romantic interludes
Till they commit themselves to the muted journey home
And the pool player rests on another cue
Last nights hero picking up his dues
A honeymoon gambled on a ricochet
She's staring at the brochures at the holidays
Chalking up a name in your hometown
Standing all your mates to another round
Laughing at the world till the barman wipes away
The warm wet circles

I saw teenage girls like gaudy moths a classroom's shabby butterflies
Flirt in the glow of stranded telephone boxes
Planning white lace weddings from smeared hearts
And token proclamations, rolled from stolen lipsticks
Across the razored webs of glass
Sharing cigarettes with experience with her giggling
Jealous confidantes, she faithfully traces his name
With quick bitten fingernails
Through the tears of condensation that'll cry through the night
As the glancing headlights of the last bus kiss adolescence goodbye

In a warm wet circle
Like a mother's kiss on your first broken heart, a warm wet circle
Like a bullethole in Central Park, a warm wet circle
And I'll always surrender to the warm wet circles

She nervously undressed in the dancing beams of the Fidra lighthouse
Giving it all away before it's too late
She'll let a lover's tongue move in a warm wet circle
Giving it all away and showing no shame
She'll take a mother's kiss on her first broken heart
A warm wet circle, she'll realise that she plays her part in a warm wet circle

Not posting the lyrics to the whole song... but this is one of the funniest I've heard...

"Sneaking like celery, yeah I'm stalkin"

"Like a Kenny Loggins record no one's ever gonna hear ya"

From "Boom" by Bloodhound Gang.  Not a great song but it's just funny lyrics.

"Og du var full av dritt, og jeg var drita full,
og det var kjærlighet ved første...na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na etc."

This is a song from a norwegian band called Jokke & Valentinterne who usually sang about beer and a low life, the frontman sadly died from a bunch of years with too much of heavy drinking some time ago. Roughly translated it says "And you were full of shxt, and I was shxtty drunk, and it was love at first na-na-na..."

Doesen't seem too funnyin english, right? The thing is that "full" in norwegian means both drunk and full in english, and that "full" as the last part of the first line in the chorus rhymes very nicely on the word replaced by the "na-na-na"'s, I'll give you a hint: In english it could be (the drinking connotations will be lost, and the rhythm is off, but never mind): "and I was full of luck, and it was love at first ... na-na-na". Get it?  ::) ;D

And ten there's the Bloodhound Gang's The Bad Touch, but everybody knows that one, right? Especially "Turn me on, I'm Mister Coffee with an automatic drip".

Tor,
That's funny because we know the word we pronounce as dreet.  I suppose it's the same.

Well maybe it isn't common.  If I think about it, I know it from one of my old old old college roommates, who used to say, playing cards, "Who dealt this dreet?"  It meant he had a bad hand, or he wanted us to think it was bad.

Is Kiefer a Norweigian name?

Yes, it most certainly is the same word, and I'm pretty sure it has norwegian roots. Swedish has the word pronnouced "chit" and danish uses "dreed", norwegian is the only one with "dreet".  The midwest is full of people with norwegian heritage, especially Minnesota. Probably because of the similar climate. You may have seen "Fargo", which uses some norwegian words (can't remember which one's, but "takk" - "thanks" may have been one of them). But Kiefer is not nordic at all, it's irish I believe. But then again around half of all the irishmen went to the US way back, it seems, and some of them probably found norwegian wifes or husbands.  ;)

Thanks, Mastiff.  Have I seen Fargo?  It was filmed here.  I live in it.  Most of it is pretty accurate.

That sounds rather scary!  ;) Anyway, I messed up with the danish, it's of course "skid", not "drid". But the "dreet" certainly is norweigan.
