Requests:

** Last Played.. 88:45 ago.. Can this be changed to days after 23:59? ie  1 Day 10:10 instead of 34:10

Yes, please.  Even just 1 Day (without the 10:10) would be fine with me.  I'm not concerned with remainders.

I think it switches to days at 100 hours.

There's a debate inside the company.

My theory is that "4.7 minutes" or "0.8 days" is easier to understand than "4:42" or "19:12:00" because your brain only has to consider one unit instead of multiple units.

The counter-point is that there's a standard (read correct) way to write durations that people are accustomed to.

I agree with you. Unless there is some calculation being done where precision is important, and that seems improbable here, with your approach you get a number with a useful, easily processable level of precision.

Personally, I don't like 0.8 days. How long is that? I failed math you know!

I do like 17 hours 14 minutes. 1 day 4 hours 32 minutes, etc.

Few have adapted the swatch internet time, so decimals aren't appropriate for time measurements.

On the other side, when I see 14:32 is that hours and minutes or minutes and seconds?

Either 00:12:34 or better yet, spell it out, 12 minutes 34 seconds. No doubt what is meant that way.

How about an option to change that? That way people can have it the way they want=.

88:32 is just useless to me...

I think I can honestlt say I will never care that it has been EXACTLY 88:32 since I listened to something - When would I need that precision?

...but if I saw that it had been 3 days 16 Hours (or 3.6 days) - that is interesting/informative - Which I belive is the key aspect of this feature.

Would anyone ever care enough to notice, say, a difference between 88:32 and 88:37 since a song was played? - I sure don't think so.

I think Link has hit the nail on the head...  too much precision only serves to confuse.  Rather than debate if "4.5 days" is better than "4 days 12 hours" or "108 hours" or "00:108:00" or "108:00" why not consider if "5 days" is enough precision to satisfy.

If we're talking on the order of days, I don't care about minutes or hours.  If we're talking on the order of a day then I don't care about minites.  And I *never* care about seconds.

But I wonder:  are we debating how much precision should be stored in the database, or how much precision should be displayed.  I can't imagine it matters how the database represents the date/time, so long as it's maximum precision for the needs.  If it's presentation, why can't the users select this?

My vote goes with spelling it out... x days, y hours, z minutes

Although personally, when it comes to how long ago I last played a file, after a day, I don't care about hours, minutes, or seconds.

So maybe only go to 3 places... x hours, y minutes, z seconds -> x days, y hours, z minutes -> x monthds y days, z hours -> x years, y months, z days

Exactly.

I'm certainly the only one, but I sometimes found that it would be cool to let me
see the last played date.
Not just "6 months 25 days" but "31/12/04 23:59"

I see a lot of different tastes and IlPadrino's suggestion seems to make sense.

I can kind of understand the debate over which way to present the information, and it doesn't really much matter to me.  I just really think it should change to display days once it becomes a day i.e. 24 hours (not at 100 hours - that makes no sense to me).

I personally don't need/want to know the portion of days part (remainder), if it could just round to the closest day (or week, or month even) and tell me that, I would find that info much more useful.

Again, everyone likes things different, this is just my opinion.

Thanks for listening, and keep up the good work.

Personally, Id prefer x days y hours z minutes, or some variation thereon. But at the risk of widening the scope of this thread, I think Link almost raises another interesting point. If the displayed time is user friendly, why do we have to write [lastplayed]<12345 or whatever for view schemes and searches and not something similar to the display? I think there should be some consistency available to reduce confusion.

As long as I can tell if one track (or album) was played more recently than another then I could care less if it is displayed in Martian.

I'm sorry, what I am trying to say is whatever format, we get used to it and it works.  :)

This is one of my favourite compalins....Date handling has been MC's weak spot since ver 8 when I started using it (yeah yeah, back then it was called MJ)...

While using 9.x now, I thought there was a problem with dates over all.  One simple test to prove the problem is to try to create a view scheme with "Date Imported" and perhaps group it by 3. Doesn't work? Exactly!

Suggestions:
* Let MC use one type of date internally (don't know the american format for this, but in Sweden we use 2004-09-24 00:58:12), let the users specify how they want to see it by customization. I've done this type of conversions a dozen times while scripting in ASp so it couldn't be that hard. I just doesn't see the problem here.
The internal date format should be used for all sorts of sorting, grouping etc., not the external!

*Another thing that keeps me from using MC10+ or 11 is lacking posibilities to use dates in MC. For me, Last played dates could be so much useful if the DB was structured in another way, storing the date a song was played in another table.

For instance:
Table 1:
song_idsong_nameartist
1Insane in the brainCypress Hill
2AlwaysErasure

Table 2
song_iddate_played
12004-09-22 05:22
12004-09-22 05:47
22003-02-12 16:12

Anyway, I don't suppose to see the later improvement to MC or that ppl would see the possibilities using a more relational database, but at least a PROPER date management would really be in place...:) Dates are so great! You use them all the time, why not with your favourite Media Player??

My vote is for fractional units.  To me, "2.5 days" is much easier to read than "2 days 12 hours".  I don't care about the smaller units, so my preference would be that the major units be Days, Months and Years, with one decimal place used for sorting purposes.

Examples:
2.5 days (read as two and a half days)
1.25 months (one and a quarter months)
1.0 years (one year)

Honestly, I don't care about hours, minutes or seconds at all.

This is my favourite request from MJ v8, but i'm only interested in the Date Imported.

The day i could use year-month-day? (i don't mind too much about day but it can be useful sometimes), i'll be a little more happy  :D, and i'll have another work not to do by myself. Until these day arrives i suppose that i'll have to follow creating a new date imported each month  ::).

I think that there's a notable difference between this

http://www.hosting-hub.com/filedeposit/uploads/27092004/Mc-Date%20Imported.jpg

and this

http://www.hosting-hub.com/filedeposit/uploads/27092004/Mc-My%20Date%20Imported.jpg

[Images changed to links because of size by JimH]

Any chance we'll get some of this?

Edited:i've thought about it in other way.
When i use Date Imported i want to know what day (month/year) i imported the file, not how long ago.
And sorry, i don't want to guess what date is 243,9 days ago  ;)

Maybe there's some way that i don't know  ?
