List of TV Tuners and Video cards supported
« on: September 24, 2004, 06:23:55 pm »

Hi:
I am trying out MC for the fiirst time, and it's pretty cool. Probably the best Windows media software thats around.

I was looking for a list of TV Tuner cards and Video cards that MC supports.
Importantly, does it support Haupaggne WinTV PVR-250 (350) ? And the Remote control that comes with it?

The website, strangely, dosent have a list of certified hardware that works with this. Any pointers?

ANALOG cards that use WDM drivers are supported.

Example:

ATI ALL-IN-WONDER,
ATI TV Wonder, TV Wonder VE, TV Wonder USB,

Hauppauge WinTV PCI cards, WinTV USB.

Other brands are supported as long as WDM drivers are used.  Looking at it from another point of view, if a card can use the universal driver from here http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/download.html, it will work with Media Center.

There is a FAQ item here http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/faq/faq.pl that is basically still correct.

Cards that are NOT supported:

Those with hardware compression. Example, Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250/350. These are currently only partially supported. I had spent sometime working on these cards, but did not have time to finish the job. They remain on my to-do list.

Digital TV cards. I am working on ATI HDTV Wonder card.

Hi:
Thanks for the response.

When you say WinTV-PVR 250/350 is only partially supported, what functions do you mean?
1. Will I be able to bypass the cards hardware compression and make MC do the recording?
2. Will I be able to use the TV Out of the card (on the 350 only) ?

TIA,
Rommel

I do not remember exactly, but you may be able to

1. View live TV.

2. Record in MPEG2 (using the hardware encoding).

You probably are not able to do time-shifting.

Hi:

So I went ahead and bought the Haupagge PVR-350 (the best there is in the market, with a great quality TV-out) since you said that I'd be able to do most everythign except time-shifting (which I dont care about at this point).

My MC-10 trial period ended meanwhile, so when my card arrived I had to buy it. And guess what:

1. MC dosent even detect the card.  Forget recording TV, I cant even watch it.

2. The remote that comes with PVR-350 (a standard IRman remote) dosent work with MC. I tried the plugins but cant  get the remote to work. The remote works with the PVR-350s software, so I know that the harware is fine.

So my aim of 'integration' is still a pipe dream.  If, indeed, the card is unsupported, I would like a refund of my licence.

Perhaps you could let Yaobing respond.  It could be just a setup problem.

Your patience will be appreciated.

As I said, this card is only partially supported, and we will continue working on it. As for MC not detecting the card, most likely that is not an MC problem. Try reinstall the latest Hauppauge driver.

I was able to do an "Auto Scan" and it scanned all the broadcast channels that I get on my TV.

But when I select a Channel No and say Watch, the window shows blank.

I closed MC and started the Happpague WnTV2000 software, and was able to watch the tuned channels.

Any idea whats going on?

TIA,

Did you try updating the driver for the card?

Can you hear any sound at this point?

Try this:

TV Configuration, Display tab, click Default button.

No, there's no sound or video.
I went through all the channels, and they all have the same symptom.

I havent re-installed any drivers. I would have thought that if it works with the other 2 software apps (WinTV2000 and SageTV) that should not be an issue. Is it worth trying?

It would not hurt to try it. Reinstalling the driver would be absolutely necessary if your problem was

as you said in earlier post. Now it looks like MC does detect the device since you were able to scan for channels.

Hi:
MC did detect the card and scanned all the available channels.
However, when I try to watch a channel, it says somehting like "Watching Channel 11", but the screen is blank.

I reintalled all the drivers from the PVR-350's CD, but the result was the same.

When you update drivers, it's best to check the company's web site and get their latest.  Drivers on a CD are often old.
