Which headphones for motorcycle helmet use?
« on: September 28, 2004, 01:05:39 am »

I'm thinking about getting the Challenger M series (or maybe the C series - I don't know the difference yet, other than price), or maybe the Etymotic Research ER-6's.  I also wonder about just getting custom molds made to use with the Sony FontopiaŽ Headphones, modelMDR-EX71SL/WK.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

I use the Sony's everyday.  The rubber part seals your ear canal and blocks the wind noise.  They come with a very long cord.  I run that and the ipod remote down my right sleeve where the remote clips to a jacket strap on my wrist.  I can then skip a song, adjust volume to different speed conditions or pause if I need to hear more of what's going on around me.

Get Ety's or Shure's. Way better than Sony Ex71s. Check head-fi.org for comparisons and reviews.

I ordered up some Challengers.  I had the ear impressions made last week, and should get the 'phones nest week.  Very excited to try them out.  Not cheap, but great reviews.  We'll see.

I tried the sony's, and they sounded good, but they wanted to move around when putting on the helmet, and made my ears start to hurt after only about 30 minutes.  I'm sure that would get better, but the Challengers will fit perfectly to my ears.

The Challengers arrived this morning.  They'll take a little getting used to in getting them inserted in my ears, but, holy moly!

They sound great!

I haven't used them in my helmet yet, but they fit like a glove.  I've had them in my ears for about 20 minutes now, and I can barely tell they are even there.  And did I mention they sound fantastic!

Now, if I can just get the rest of my library converted to aac for the iPod, I'll be all set.  It should take about a week, give or take, of constant conversion.

Justin,

FYI, you do not have to convert files to aac for them to play on iPod. I am pretty sure you already know this and are doing the conversion because it is your preference,  but I justed wanted to be sure.

Thanks Steve.

I'm converting 111gb worth of mostly ape, and some mp3 files, and I understand aac offers better sound at 128ish kbits.  If my test sample is correct (10% of files and size), I should get it all down to 35gb of space at about 128.  I left a little room for error, since it will take about 8 full days of nonstop processing to finish.  I leave for the trip in 15 days. ;D :o
