Unable to connect to Media Server
« on: September 30, 2004, 06:34:58 pm »

Running version 10.0.161 on both machines.
Both machines on internal 192.168.0.X network.
Both running a firewall, set to minimum security - Home Network

When I search for a server it does find the server.
It does list the songs.
But when I click to play a song, I get the error:

"Media Center encounter errors while trying to play the last several files.

Error: Unknown Error

PLease make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location"

I initially tried this with the port set to automtic port selection. Then I tried it at 80. Same thing.

I am surprised about this error, as it does see it and lists the files. Just won't play.

BTW...I thought I figured it out, but I'm not sure. That is, I RIP to FLAC files, and had not installed the FLAC codec on the machine I'm trying to play on. I installed it, and have set FLAC as the encoder for ripping. But, I do NOT see FLAC as a file type in my association list in the options. So I am suspicious that is my problem.

Any ideas?

[EDIT]
It looks to me like JRM doesn't support FLAC very well based on a little reading I just did from a search on FLAC. I bet this is my probem.

But, I'm seeing that FLAC is supposed to work on V10, which is what I have; And, it is working fine on the first machine, bu tnot this one. I should point out that in installed FLAC in a much earlier version of 10, and my upgrades have remianed working. I just recently installed the 10 on the PC that won't play the files from teh media server.

FLAC may not work.  Can you try MP3 or APE to test?

I have determined that FLAC does not work.

It's interesting that I have installed the FLAC stuff on the newer install, and it does NOT work. Yet, it works on the other one.

The only difference is that on the other one, I installed FLAC while V9 (don't remember which specific one) was on it. I upgraded to 10, and have been as each new update comes out, and it works fine.

I'm beginning to think that now that I've decided to use FLAC, and ripped a couple hundred CDs, I need to convert them all to something else.

Unless I get some better ideas here on getting it working. What I've been reading since last night is a lot of frustration in the lack of FLAC support on this product.

Now to decide what to rip to.
