Disc-at-once ripping/encoding
« on: November 03, 2002, 01:35:30 am »

Hi all,

Any chance of doing ripping and encoding "disc-at-once", rather than "track-at-once"?

For example, with "rip and encode simultaneously" off, at the moment, it goes

- rip track 1
- encode track 1
- rip track 2
- encode track 2
- ...
- rip track n
- encode track n

I would prefer it if it went
- rip track 1
- rip track 2
- ...
- rip track n
- encode track 1
- encode track 2
- ...
- encode track n

This is because, on my machine at least, ripping uses very little CPU, but encoding maxes it out at 100%. This way, I could still use my computer while it was ripping (I'm using digital secure, so not worried about errors), then leave it while it was encoding, rather than use-stop-use-stop-use-stop-...

Also, this would probably speed up ripping somewhat,  because the CD drive would not "spin down" between tracks, and "spinning-up" to full speed takes some time on my drive.

Thanks,
Paul

Have you tried ripping to wav and then converting to desired format? This works fast, and provided you have enough HD space, takes up little room when done in relativily small batches. eg: 100-200 files at a time. Make sure to delete original file so as not to fill up HD.

After a run in with nasty 9  >:(  ,and files being moved, I've had to put back every file I had on this machine. So, fastest way I've found is: rip to wav > convert to mp3.

Settings for encoder: --alt-preset fast extreme

Larger then fast standard, but less so then extreme and insane settings. Plus they sound much better than standard.

MY $0.02 on encoding btw.  ;)
