Ripping error-output directory
« on: October 08, 2004, 01:43:31 am »

Hi, I am a new user of Media Center (great product).  On most CD's I have no problem ripping but on a few I get the error message 'The output directory could not be created for one or more files - Check output directory in the ripping options'  This only happens on a few CD's, all the other Cd's rip fine.  Thanks for any help you can give me on this.

Please post your system info (from MC's help menu). There was a bug fix on this a while back.

You may want to try the version 173 available at the top of this board.

I have installed version 173 and still get the same error on the same CD's!
Any Ideas?

Mode:Normal

At first: In my opinion everybody should use Secure ripping (you have Normal in your options). It is in Advanced Ripping Options. Secure ripping is slower, but you can be reasonably sure that everything gets ripped properly and if there are problems you get information about them.

The output directory could not be created for one or more files

On which stage of the ripping process the error message appears? It could be related with the folder naming. What is your naming scheme? What CDs are making the trouble (Artist, album, etc names)?

In other words: What folder names MC is trying to write?

The error message appears just as it about to start to rip, ie it has found the artist/album info etc.  The CD's? It seems to be EMI (1985/86) only at the moment but given that I have about 6months to go to rip my entire collection I will keep you posted.

I have been teaching my daughter how to use MC10 (build 173) and she encounted the same error message when she tried to rip Britney Spears - Oops! I Did it Again.

I am suspicious of the "!" in the album name.  Tonight, I will try to remove the exclamation point before ripping.

MC should take care of handling illegal characters. However, the "!" is allowed. At least in W2000/XP.

A folder or filename cannot contain: \ , / , * , : , ? , " , < , > or | .

Then I'm not sure why I'm getting the output directory error message.  Using XP.  About a dozen other CDs ripped fine.

I noticed another thread was started with the same error message.  I think my daughter's Britney Spears album is titled: "Oops!...I Did it Again"

The 3 dots may be the problem.  I'll try to rip by taking out the dots.

I have had this issue from time to time both with some CDs and with importing some files and it has for me, always been a problem with illegal characters especially colans and periods in the file name. I usually substitute a dash for the illegal ones and everything is good again.
