Great Software! But the languages...
« on: October 09, 2004, 11:19:56 am »

Hi, I use Media Jukebox since 1999 and I love more Media Center.
You give many plugins and skins to users but why you support only english?
I'm italian and with MC I can't download cover of italian artists and I can't use it in italian language...

Plese consider this...

Changing the language file isn't that easy you know.
I've spend many hours to translate the program in Dutch.
Yes, everything in the program can be translated, but not everything does come up translated on the screen.
Furthermore in many cases the translated words just don't fit in the space that is available for them, just because these words are longer in Dutch than in English. For instance I translated the word 'Play' in the Dutch word 'Afspelen'. That is a longer word than 'Play'. Till now it fitted everywhere where it occurs, but in the new Library browser it doesn't fit anymore in the availabe space for the row 'Play Albums Files'. I now only see half of it ('Afsp'). Thats very ugly!!
These are just a few of the obstacles I met while translating from English to Dutch. And I guess that will be the same for other languages.

Well if this is the reply for a request from an international customer from the official moderators... it looks like jriver has a long way to go to become a great software house... pity because the software is good - but support - user education files (online help) and internationalization still seem too much to handle... come on! you have good software - start making it user friendly and global.

I try to change the language file but, as said King Sparta, is not easy because if an Italian word it's longer than an English Word, so the word doesn't appear...
If the major software house (such as Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia etc...) traslate its software in all the language, why you don't? I understand english and I'm not in trouble to use MC in english but my parents and several friends can't use it because they don't understand everything.

Finally, try to internationalize also the download of cover...
If you want, I try to recommend some italian websites where you can search for cover...

KingSparta speaks for himself.  Ask his wife.  I can speak for JRiver.

We would love to do fully internationalized versions, but we have higher priorities at the moment.  We've been moving in that direction and perhaps in a few more years it will be possible.

So please understand that it's a question of resources, not a question of attitude.
