OT - thanks to the UK for their Aid to HMCS Chicoutimi
« on: October 11, 2004, 03:06:39 pm »

As you may have heard, one of our (Canada's) subs ran into a bit of trouble this past week with an onboard fire and resulting death of one of the seamen.  Having a family member in the Navy at the present time (although not assigned to the Chicoutimi) makes it personal. Knowing that MC has more than a few members  from the Brisish Isles,   we would like to extend our  thank yous to the HMS Montrose, her Captain and Crew who headed up the rescue efforts,  the pilots who braved the stormy weather to take the injured seamen to medical facilities, the people of Faslane Scotland where the Chicoutimi was towed to,  and the service men/women who provided the hounor guard  for the deceased seaman.

I was in Edinburgh last week when this happened and there was quite a bit of media coverage. I wouldnt call myself claustrophobic as such, but I cant think of anything much worse than serving in a submarine at the best of times, and drifting in a lifeless sub in the stormy North Atlantic must have been truly awful. Im glad it turned out as well as it did in the circumstances. Its a bit embarrassing seeing as we sold it to you and you were taking it to its new home. I hope you ask for your money back. I'll leave you to imagine some of the 'dodgy second-hand car dealer' metaphors which appeared as headlines in some of the newspaper coverage.

Lee269, it could have been sooo much worse.

I could rant for ages on the short sightedness of the Canadian Government and it's ridiculous policy on military spending, but then I'd get a headache.

I am a full fledged, card carrying peacenick, but I also don't think it's good policy to expect superior service, and valour without having proper equipment to do it.
