For me a calculated Album Rating could be a starting point, but I guess I would rather keep that empty until I actually rate the album.
you say "rate the album" this implies more research than just rating all the tracks. You want extra info like how long the album was in the charts etc. Which "could" lead to the situation that you described, an album that does well in the charts but you dont particularly like or the converse.
My "preference" is ... Do i like this album given the tracks it has !!
Since when i listen to the album, its the sound that affects me more than anything else. Dont really pay attention to how it did on the charts or the cover art. Its rated solely on music.
So i use avg ratings as a rough guide to how much i liked an album and as a way to pick albums that would go into top 5 or 10 lists.
With avg ratings it could be possible to get a best of list by genre/year/by the artist/decade/ etc.
