Tivo Software ver 1.3 Okay?
« on: November 03, 2004, 07:43:11 pm »

Tivo recently released ver 1.3.  I am using Media Center 10 with tivo.

Is it okay to upgrade to the latest desktop software?

I am hoping this will cure my problem.  Right now when I try to move quickly through songs with channel down button the server usually crashes.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Ver 1.3 is an important upgrade if you use TiVo's desktop. Since you are using MC10, you may not be using their desktop. The upgrade is a security fix relating to malicious code invoked just by viewing a jpg in their desktop (and it wasn't just TiVo that was hit by this).

You might give MC11 a try (you can install it beside v10, instead of on top of v10). It's very changed (from a code point of view) from v10 and may have fixed the page down problem.

Thanks for the information.  I will give them both a try as soon as I get a chance.

Tried version 11 and the media server is not working with Tivo.  My music files are in WMA format.  When I try to play the file it shows all the info and begins to act like it will play, but at best it will kind of give a static burst.  It caused one of my Tivos to reboot.

Running the media server for version 10 still works as before, but if I hit the channel down button very quickly it will still cause the server to error out.

Check the TiVo Server options - are you converting to mp3?

I have the box called:

Support All Audio Formats (convert to mp3 if necessary) checked.

Is this what you mean and should it be checked?

I just tried it with this box unchecked and the Tivo says this folder does not contain any playable music, so I am thinking this box has to be checked.  Is there another setting I should check somewhere?  I would really like to get this working.

Thanks,

I also wanted to mention that server bandwith is showing about 2500 kb/s and I think before even in the 3000+ kb/s range.

If I recall when I tried the ver 10 server I was getting around 350 kb/s range.

Sorry, I wasn't clear before. I meant: try the TiVo Server in Media Center 11. It will eventually replace Media Server. You'll find it under plugins in Media Center.

John,

I found the plugins and the Tivo plugin under the interface section.

I only see two options, start and stop.

I have started and stopped and I do not see anything coming up on the Tivo at all.

When I manually start the ver 11 server then I have the errors mentioned above.

It's not under plug-in manager. Instead, look at the tree on the left, and the last entry should be "Plug-ins". Check underneath that entry.

Thanks!  This has it working.  It seems like the ability to quickly scroll with channel up and down through songs is now fixed.  This is great!

Why does anyone use the Tivo Software component at all?  Media Center serves the music without the Tivo software, right?  Am I missing something?

Hi Rob,

There's no reason to use the TiVo software if you don't want to. TiVo Server (and the old Media Server) will use the Beacon that comes with the TiVo's desktop if it is running. Otherwise we run our own.
