When burning a CD from my library (APE format) I get to the
end - where MC tells me it's writing the lead-out and closing
the session - and I consistently get lockups.  Eventually MC
(version 10.0 by the way) will tell me "logical unit not ready,
operation in progress" and from there my only option is to
shut down the machine.

The activity light on my CD/R drive (Toshiba DVD-ROM model
SD-R1002) stays on until I shut down, and typically I have to
actually unplug the machine for a minute or so to get a clean
restart.

The burned CD (audio format, by the way) plays all right, but
the quality seems off somehow to my non-audiophile ear.

Oh, I have "DMA If Available" set in the ATA/ATAPI section of

Device Manager.

Hmm, I just thought of something - I'm not using Ultra DMA
for my drives, because I'm running an old version of linux as
a second OS and it doesn't recognize it - the BIOS checks
for UDMA devices when it starts, then gives up and just runs
conventional IDE....  Could this be related to my problem?

Oh yeah, MC is version 10.0.

Nobody has any ideas on this?  I just burned the same playlist
to CD using my laptop and Winders Media Player, with no
problems and much higher-quality sound.  And I find that
offensive; I'd MUCH rather use MC than any MSFT s/w....

I've been having problems burning as well.  The resulting CDs are fine until just pass halfway, usually around track 8 on a normal (~12-15) track CD.  Then it would start skipping and popping the finally the CD player looses sync.  Strange that it would be fine for over half the CD then go belly-up.

In trying to fix this, I first I turned off the ability to record in the Windows XP properties dialog for my CD-R drive as suggested in the sticky burn thread.  That didn't help.  The burn process actually hung, although I'm not sure the message was identical to the one you are seeing.

I have now tried turning off the "Decode directly to CD" option in MC 10 burn options.  The CD seemed to burn fine but I haven't had a chance to play it back yet.  I'll see tonight if it worked.

Have you read the MC help file on this topic?  It is pretty good and discusses these various options.

Yes, I've read some of the help and commentary on CD burning,
and have tried turning off the "record to CD" property in XP.  No
help.

I listened very carefully to one of the CDs burned with MC, and
compared it to the one burned on the other machine with Windows
Media Player.  There is a definite difference in quality - the MC
version has a skip within the first ten seconds of the playback,
and slight but noticable humming/static throughout.

I don't want to try anything else till I get more info (and I'll check
the help file again) because of the lockup and restart difficulties.

Turning off "Decode files directly to CD" did not work.  It's really strange - CDs I burn are fine for the first 5 or 6 songs then go bad.  I'm using blank CDs from a 50 pack that have been just fine as data CDs via Easy CD Creator, so I don't think it is the media.

Matt/John/Anyone from J River - any thoughts?  next steps?

I wonder if turning off "Write CD text" would have any effect?  That seems to happen at the beginning anyway.

Try disabling or uninstalling other CD burning software.

I don't have any other CD-burning software, except Media
Player - and I need that for listening to WXRT.

Try updating to the latest version of MC10, available in a thread on this page.

No change.

I had a devil of a time getting a clean boot after this lockup, too.
Seven or eight tries, and it wasn't until I managed to get the
burned CD out of the machine that it actually got to my OS
chooser menu.
