"Artist Info" not as bulletproof as it used to be.
« on: November 24, 2004, 11:50:52 pm »

I've noticed that the "Artist Info" service just doesn't work as well as it used to.  I just hit it while on a "Beatles" song and Allmusic came up telling me that it found no match to "The + Beatles."  The closest match it found was "Thebe Lipere."

I manually entered "The Beatles" in the search box, and it did find it this time, but when I when to the Beatles page and hit the "songs" button, I got a registration screen.  I went ahead and registered, but it still seems like the Artist Info used to be a bit more bulletproof.

Thanks,

Larry

The "Artist Info" button in Media Center uses the "All Music" site for it's information -- so I guess I'm talking about both.  I notice that when I use this feature in MC, I have to fuss with it more than I used to in order to get the correct band info to come up.  In other words, the band info is on the site, but for some reason the initial launch (i.e. hitting "Artist Info" in MC with a song highlighted) doesn't seem to properly understand what band I'm looking for even though a subsequent search at allmusic can easily find the band.

Artist Info should be in the MC tree under Playing Now.

I guess that All Music Guide has changed their search. MC sends The+Beatles, but their search engine needs The + Beatles or plain The Beatles.

oh ok, i was looking for a dang button

I did some playing with the Search URL

it seems to work fine

I think anything found is based on what comes from Allmusic

because MC uses the Artist field as it is, to build a URL and submit that to the Allmusic Search.

There is both an "artist info" toolbar button and a tree command.  I prefer to use the button, as it opens to the artist in the external web browser, whereas, the tree command opens to the AMG artist page internal to MC.  As of .129 the artist info button does not work, as reported by lalittle.  The tree command continues to function correctly.

Too strange! It wasn't working this afternoon, but I'll confirm that it's working now.  I'm sure KingSparta is correct that this is dependent on AMG rather, than, MC.

AMG has recently redesigned their whole web site. Some things are still a bit slow and somethings don't work at all, but it's getting better. It's still a work in progress.

My guess is the problem is with AMG.
