Plugin for MP4 files encoded with Nero?
« on: November 25, 2004, 03:32:08 pm »

Is there a plugin for MC11 that allows me to view video files converted into mp4 files from DVD using the Nero tools?

The build in viewer fro mMC11 gives me an error message that it cant process files that where encoded with this codec

Any clues would be most welcome.

Happy thanksgiving to all our american friends

Sorry for reposting, but as I posted on Turkeys day probably not noticed.

Is there any way to import and play MP4 files encoded with Nero Digital in MC11?? In some earlier discussion someone suggested rename the files from mp4 to mpg but this does not work.

The error says that Quicktime cannot play this as it was encoded with a codec no recognised....

As NeroDigital is (my guess) quickly becoming a standard based on the new H264 it would be great if MC11 could support this to have central collection not just of all my audio APE files but also of my DVD's which I now encode with Nero into mp4

Many thanks !!!

I brought this up a couple of months ago.   Since I received no official response (that I recall), my conclusion is that MC is hard-coded to use the QT engine... period.  :P  So I guess if you don't like QT, don't use MC.  ;D

BTW, unless someone tells me otherwise, decoding something does not change the quality or anything.  8)  (It's the encoder that does that.)

So by that I mean that it really does not make any difference whether MC uses the QT engine or Nero's to decode the file.  The important thing is that it plays it... and it does.  ;)

Well, the point is that MC does not play mp4 files encoded with Nero Digital !

Maybe I have wrongly used the words decode versus encode.

To repeat the problem: A DVD encoded into MP4 using Nero Digital does not play in MC11 due to a QT error.

The resulting question: Is there a way to replace the QT engine to play videos with the Nero engine or any other that plays these mp4 files encoded using the latest h264 standard ??

Pretty vital question I believe for a software called Media Center.  So far I have used MC merely as an Audio Center and been very happy with it. Looks as if to be able to use it as a Video Center some more work needs to be done

MC uses the QT decoder to play MP4 files.  Do you have the latest version of QT installed?  Does it play the files?  Did you try the Nero site to see if their files are all compatible with QT?

JIm,

yes I did a check for QT updates and get the message that my version is the most recent one (V 6.5.1)

No, the file does not play in QT directly either (the error message I get is a QT error and it says the file was created in another mp4 profile and cant be played.

The Nero webpage is not specific about QT support.

You may be out of luck.

It sounds like the files are created with encryption specific to one PC and cannot be played on another.  WMP does something similar.

Try a google search.

Just checked the QuickTime webpage and found that QT in its latest version only supports H.263 codecs. No word about the new (faster and more efficient) H.264 codec used by NeroDigital.

So it looks as if its apple that needs to get moving and support H.264.

The latest is not always better.  Nero probably should follow Apple on this.

Well no, in fact Apple will follow Nero. H.264 is the defined standard as defined by the DVD Forum.

And Apple will follow. Found a press release that Quicktime will support H.264 "some time next year". See http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2004/jun/23quicktime.html for further refer

....  Well we're in for a wait then....  :-\

Interesting to note that Apple does not seem to be on the forefront of developments anymore on this but Nero is.

Follow-up question from here:

Is it possible to use another player from inside MC11 or is the use of Quicktime "hard coded" ?

If there is any way round, I'd love to replace QT with the Nero player called Showtime.

Many thanks for any hints on this. I am really not feeling like waiting for Apple to get their acts together...
