"Search for Media Servers" fails over Wireless
« on: November 25, 2004, 04:40:46 am »

OK, so my wireless strength is a little low at the back of my house, but it is certainly good enough to be able to browse the web and other things on my network.

It is also good enough to use MC if the connection to MC 'server' is already there.

But if the link is dropped and i have to do a new "Search for Media Servers" it always fails. It is very quick to fail as well which surprises me, why doesn't it sit and try for a while?

So at the moment i have to unplug the laptop from the stereo, walk half-way through the house, then do "Search for Media Servers", connect and walk back and plug it in.

Would be lovely if this could be fixed for me!

The "Search" capability relies on UDP broadcasts. Routers don't forward these kind of packets on. So, at a guess, the wireless or something else between your client and server is acting as a router and dropping the packet.

Instead of doing search, or walking, just enter the IP address of the server.

Huh? They do on my segments. :-)

DNS is a UDP broadcast packet. It certainly gets forwarded.

I don't think he was saying they all drop UDP - just that mine is!

Not sure about the theory - as it is definitely to do with how close i am to the WAP - but hardcoding the MC IP wuold certainly seem to be a solution. I will try as soon as i get home.....

Nope, DNS is a normal UDP packet, not a broadcast.
