Hi,

I have my media center HTPC connected to HDTV and music system. Every time I want to listen to music, I do not want to turn on my HDTV. I would like to control the media center 10 running on the HTPC from another machine (a laptop in this case).

I am currently thinking of running a TightVNC server on HTPC and a client on the laptop to achieve something like that. Is there a better way to do this?

Search this forum for "netremote".  It may be what you want.  Sorry I can't be more specific, but I don't use it.

Another option is MC's built-in Remote Server. ( Options > Startup > Run Remote Server )

It allows MC to be controlled with a web browser from anywhere.

Thanks Matt. Remote Server sounds like exactly what I am looking for .

I tried to enable it as you suggested, however when I click OK on the Options dialog box, I get a message saying

Couldn't create WebRemote Listner.

When I click OK on this message, I get another error message:

Failed to start remote server.

Do I need to install any plugin to enable this? I have attached the System Info at the end of this message.

Sounds like something else on your computer is using the same port. Try changing ports.

Thanks for the hint. I changed the port to 81 from 80 and it works just fine now

Is there a way to improve the interface of the remote server? The current interface is very minimal...

Yes I did. but I do not think any of them has a web browser interface, do they? I prefer web browser interface because that means I can use it from anywhere, any computer.

Also, it is unreasonable to pay $15 just for the ability to control it remotely. I think this functionality should be bundled with MC. Another way to look at it: I have $15 to spend - should I spend it on netremote or for MC10 to MC11 upgrade? I would rather do MC10 to MC11 with my $15 and expect that this is improved somewhat. Wont you agree with me?

Both MC10 and MC11 can be controlled from another PC by running a browser.  If you haven't been able to do this, please provide details of what you're doing.

In MC10, you run WebRemote.

In MC11, this became a built in feature called RemoteServer.  It's configured in options/startup.
