I have my collection of 185gb mp3's in a 250gb ntfs hard disk.

Two questions:

1) How safe is it for my mp3's to defragment that hd and with which utility should I do it (windows defrag, norton speeddisk). Should I do it or will it damage my files?

2) I've heard of an mp3 defragmenter utility. What is it, where can I get it, is it worth it?

There is no such critter as an MP3 defragger.
Any defragger will do a good job, I like the latest incarnation of Diskkeeper.

actually there is a tagging/renming utility that actually defragments the mp3 [put's the tag in the beggining of the file and sorts the data] but i can't remember which one it is...

There may well be a product that claims to 'defrag' MP3s.

Fact is, the tags are going to be at the beginning of the file for ID3V2 (except v2.4) and at the end of the file for ID3V1.

I don't know why I'd want to sort the data in a tag, not like it is going to be found quicker.
