Backing up mp3's
« on: December 09, 2004, 04:14:37 am »

I back up my mp3's [sfv checked] and when I restore them
the sfv won't verify.

Does anyone know why that is happening and if it normal or not???

You could just be changing the dates in the file header.  Fingerprint is an MD5 checker that can give you info on what's changed.

Quote
A utility to see if any files in one or more directories have been created, deleted, or changed since the last scan. It's useful for checking if a program, e.g. viruses and trojans, has changed your all-important Windows files (this is similar to such security software as Tripwire). The use of MD5 checksums guarantee detection of file changes. FingerPrint can also be used to find duplicate files, search for files with a specific MD5 value, and save MD5 values to file (and compare with). A command line version is also included.

How does fingerprint know/tell what has changed ?

From what i understand of the above, MD5 is similar to sfv cept it uses 128bits instead of sfv's 32.

I don't know, unless it's keeping separate information about the file headers.  If you take the checksums, zip the files and then recover them, Fingerprint will tell you it's the time & date info that's changed.
