Some songs crash MC10
« on: December 02, 2004, 01:00:58 am »

I have a couple of songs that crash MC10 while playing.  The song will continue to play, but I get the windows error message asking do I want to send the error report etc.  As soon as I click 'no', MC stops.  These are songs that were ripped with MC.  So far I've noticed two songs:  ACDC- Hell's Bells and George Thorogood- If you don't start drinking.

Anyone else have this problem?

What version of MC do you have?

I have never had problems playing AC/DC with any version.

That's not the full version number.

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

I've done some more research into this problem and have found that it is because I have the 3D visualization called "Picture Terrain" turned on.  When I played the same song several times with it turned on, it crashed MC every time, when I turned it off- the song played through.  This doesn't happen with all songs though.

All your help is appreciated.  Here's my system:

I am by far no expert, but from looking at your system info, your computer has only 86MB of free ram, that's not much to run a cpu intensive vis like the 3-D.
Try shutting down anything that's running in the background to free up some ram.

All Video Boards Are Not Created Equal

No Service Packs Have Been Installed On His Computer

I Am Sure The Video Driver Could Use A Update Also

You Should Run Windows Update

Funny this should be brought up as I had something similar happen today. I had a file that caused MC to "hang" when it finished. Took 30+ seconds before the next track started. I verified this with Task Manager which said MC was not responding.

Try updating both MC the driver for your video card.  A newer build of MC is on this board.

Adding memory is also a good idea.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions with this problem.  I have been doing some more investigating and even after installing SP2 I have the same thing happening.  I also shut everything else down and was running MC with 125MB free.

I've discovered that if the song in question has no cover art, then when it is played with that particular visualization, it crashes.

I took the song that crashed and had no cover art, then installed an arbitrary cover art from another album and voila! no more crashing!

I then deleted the cover art for that song, and it was somehow replaced with a jpg of the Media Center logo and it still didn't crash.  I tried other songs with no artwork and they crashed as well.

I have tried to retrieve cover art for my whole collection, but some are still 'artless', so now my question is how can I search for all the songs with no art and install a default jpg?

Thanks again.

Right click on Playlists
Add Smartlist
On the Smartlist Rule drop down select: Audio - Task - No Images

Select all the files and right click  Image, Add from File, then look for a jpg that you want to use,
However this sounds like a error that should be fixed....

Did you try this with V11?

Thanks for your help!  I haven't installed V11 yet so I can't comment on it.  You're right that this should be fixed though.  I hate when I am showing off my HTPC to people and then a song comes on that makes MC crap out.
