Page not found ! Please Help!
« on: October 26, 2002, 02:32:57 pm »

Hi All

I'm new to Media Jukebox 8, and loving it but I'm having a problem.
When I try to view the URL where you can purchase MJ8 I get the error message Page cannot be found dnserror.htm.
Do any of you know how I can fix this?
I've searched the Microsoft Information database and Google groups, tried everything they suggested including reinstalling my operating system Windows 98SE to no avail.

I'm running a Pentium II 400 MHz with Win89SE.

Please help if you can.

Hi,

First of all, be sure you're running the latest version of MJ (8.0.388).

Also be sure you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer.

It should work with "Help > Buy MediaJukebox" from within MJ ?

Yves.

Hi,

Thanks for responding, I'm running MJ (8.0.388) and
IE 6.0.2800.1106.
I think it has to do with a .dll file in Windows but
I'm stumped as to a fix.

I did purchase the software from my PC at work
and do have a valid license do you or anyone know
how I can move this license form my work PC where
I can't use it to my home PC where I can't seem
to view URL that start with https://?

Again Thanks!

The https URL is a link to a secure server.  Maybe your security settings are set too high in your browser or in your firewall.

Hi Jim

I wish, https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi
just won't come up on my home PC.
I don't have a fire wall, my norton antivirus software
is disabled and my IE6 security is set as low as it will go.

Any other ideas?

Thanks Again!

Try the following...

Open a command window and try "ping rover.jriver.com"
You should get at least a message that says:
"Pinging rover.jriver.com [192.146.151.186] with 32 bytes of data:"

If you get "unknown host" there's a DNS name resolution problem either on your machine or with your ISP.

If you get that far try...
http://rover.jriver.com
You should get a message as follows: "start here for non-secure site"

Next try...
https://rover.jriver.com
You should get a small Thawte logo.

Report back how far you get.

Good Day!

After pinging rover.jriver.com I get.

Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out
Request timed out

Ping statistics for 192.146.151.186 :
 Packets: Sent=4, Recived=0, Lost=4 <100% Loss>
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds
 Minimum=Oms, Maximum=Oms, Average=Oms

What do you think?

Thanks again in advance for your insight.

The timeouts aren't necessarily bad.  Many routers are set up to discard the ICMP packets that ping uses.   You're passing the DNS lookup and that's good.

How about the 2 links?  Are you able to get to them?

http://rover.jriver.com
and
https://rover.jriver.com

Another thing to check is whether you're using a proxy server or not.  It will be in "Tools/Connections"

Whoops! I forgot to add when I try the links,

http://rover.jriver.com
and
https://rover.jriver.com

I get the standard Page not found screen with this at the end:
Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

I'm also using IE6 and Prodigy Dial up with no proxy server.
I get the same thing if I use my NetZero Dial account.

It's good to know it's not a DNS Error that was killing me.

Blake,
Try this.

In Windows, do Start/Run and then enter this command:

tracert rover.jriver.com

You should see every hop it takes to get to rover.jriver.com.  I think that somewhere it is dying.

The other possibility I can think of is that you have a proxy server setting in IE and that it is wrong.

Remy, thanks very much for helping Blake with this.

No problem Jim.  Yep, tracert would be the next step but I don't remember if that command was included in Win98.

The fact that it doesn't work from 2 different dial up accounts would suggest that the problem is on your end but that's not always true either.   Most ISPs that provide dial service (including NetZero/Juno, Prodigy, AOL, Earthlink and MSN) contract through a "wholsale dial" provider like Level 3 or UUNet to actually provide the modem platform and connectivity.   Both your ISPs could easily be served from the same modem pool at one provider.

It might also be work reporting the problem to your ISP.  Maybe there's something goofy going on in the network.

Ok Guys

This is the result or the Tracert test,

Tracing route to rover.jriver.com [192.146.151.186]
Over a maximum of 30 hops:

1     *       *       *     Request timed out

Repeated twenty-nine more times.

I also jumped to my Credit Union Site https://www.---
to make sure it worked and it did.
If I need to call Prodigy what do I tell them?

I want to thank both your for spending you Sunday
helping me figure this out.

Thanks Blake

No problem.

Tell them there may be routing problem.  Give them the host name (rover.jriver.com) and the IP address (192.146.151.186) and tell them you can't ping to it, trace route to it, or connect to a web server at that address yet others can do all 3.

I've done some checking and there doesn't appear to be any routing problems to the JRiver network from the internet backbone.

It would be very useful if anyone having this problem would take the suggestion from above about trying to get to the rover web site

https://rover.jriver.com to see if you get the ssl seal.

Then also please try going to

http://www.mediajukebox.com

and

http://origix.net  (you should get a connect but it's not an active page so it will return an error)

The results of these steps will help us determine if and where a problem exists...

Thanks,
Bob
