problem streaming avi
« on: December 10, 2004, 02:11:49 pm »

hi,

i try to stream an avi from pc1 (media server) to pc2.

pc2 plays the avi (divx521) without problem via filesystem.
after choosing the file via mc10.173 (pc2)->media server (pc1), the screen shows "opening" an thats it. i wonīt change after 10 min. when closing the window mc hangs and has to killed through alt-f4. no change when trying wmp instead of directx.

on pc1 the media server shows, that the avi is being transferred (5700kb/sec). the avi can be shown on pc1 without problems, too.

plz help - i have no idea where to look for an mistake.

MC11 tries to buffer the whole AVI file before it starts playback. At least that is the case with Library Server in MC11. I don't know if there is a difference in that in MC10 Media Server.

How fast is your network? Do you have enough temp space on the client?

hi alex,

buffer the WHOLE avi? woha.... buffering 1.5GB - thats not what i understand of streaming.

well the media server shows 5700kb/sec used bandwith. what do you mean by "temp space"? space on the clients hdd? if yes, theres enough space 30gb free.

Yes, I meant the space on the client.

I consider the buffering thing as a bug. It was discussed in this thread: Video via media server?

Also I find now that it was Media Server, not Library Server.

well i tried some more...

itīs like you said, alex, mc10 seems to download the whole avi instead of streaming it.
there is no problem with mpg-files. they start to play at once.

is this a known bug in mc10? is there a workaround known?

thx

it seems that only the developer can give a 100%-answer there.
all threads regarding this subject donīt give an answer just state the problem.

so plz ...

does mc10/11 stream avi like it does with mpg?
if yes - how?
if not (like it seems), is it a bug or a missing feature?

It's the weekend.

I'll tell you what I know but there's some uncertainty in the answer.

Not all files CAN be streamed.

And

AVI files can contain different types of files, and only Microsoft knows how to distinguish which ones they are.

You might be able to find out more by searching at Google.

sorry about bothering you on the weekend. the internet makes one forget about that.
---
itīs true, mc10 doesnīt seem to care about the container. it wonīt stream files as long as they are encoded with a mpeg4 codec like divx 521 or nero digital.

mc10 plays these files (now), but wonīt stream them.
---
since you "produce" the media server, i guess you & your team are most likely the ones, who can specify the type of file required for streaming. thats all i need to know.
google wonīt help, because vlc can stream these files - so it is possible. since everthing else works great with mc10, iīd like to stay with it & purchase it.

(the above is not meant to be negative in any way - my english is just limited)

Perhaps the other program assumes that the AVI's are always video.  This isn't a safe assumption.
