Kernel Streaming Support?
« on: January 11, 2004, 01:45:35 pm »

I have several DTS audio files that I'd like to be able play through MC.  I have an external DSP that accepts and decodes many formats, including HDCD and DTS, via SPDIF.

The problem is that my M-Audio Revolution 7.1 driver currently does not support SPDIF via ASIO.  The kmangler (er, kmixer) makes it impossible to pass DTS via SPDIF and I need a solution that bypasses this.

ASIO and Kernel Streaming are the two methods.  I can use WinAmp 2.x or 5.x with the out_ks.dll kernel streaming plugin but this plugin does not seem to work with MC9.

Has anyone else tried anything similar?

Is it possible to have kernel-streaming support added to MC10?

ASIO seems like a superior solution.

Any chance this will change:

I had the same problems so got rid of my Revo 7.1.  No ASIO via SP/DIF?  I mean, why not?  Anyway, what external DSP are you using?

Thanks,

ASIO would be my first choice.  Reportedly M-Audio has this problem at the top of their to-fix list but that could just be rumor.

Technically, ASIO and Kernel Streaming accomplish the same thing via two methods.  The difference is that ASIO needs to be supported by the driver while Kernel Streaming does not.

My HK Receiver does this, but for the moment I'm doing an eval with a Mark Levinson No 40 - a very nice unit.  If I did go this route I'd probably upgrade the card anyway, but with the No 40 jitter issues should be irrelevant since it effectively reclocks digital inputs.

Kernel stremaing would be great.  That way it doesn't matter what card i get.  I can just look for the one that apparently sounds the best vs price!

I have verified DTS playback using a $23 Chaintech card and ASIO: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?postid=2170297#post2170297

Did you try ASIO4ALL?  It works with the Revo though you may have to play around with it.

I've tried it but found ASIOx (http://exovii.free.fr/) works better and has been bullet-proof with my Revo 5.1. The only setting required was setting Channel offset to: 2.

Awesome.  I have a Revo 7.1 and the channel offset for digital out is 0 so that was easy.
