Saving view scheme settings
« on: December 21, 2004, 02:26:33 pm »

The case:

I create some nice view schemes containing certain view items (shown as step 1) and selection criteria (described as step 4). Also I make use of the new possibilites to customize the display of view items (e.g. date imported by month).

I have lots of view schemes - but they look all differently. I have to make the view scheme definitions for each scheme again and again!

Wouldn't it be great the view schemes could be handled similar to "views"? Here I can save views and assign them to any view scheme I want. Furthermore, I can assign them to sub-views. All this would be great for the view scheme itself. (By the way, the expressions might be confusing. Here I mean the upper filter section with view items)

Is a workaround existing for this? Jump into registry and copy view scheme settings?

Does it help to know that you can copy and paste view schemes in the tree?

I am aware of that. This helps only at the beginning when you initially define view schemes. When you want to make a change - e.g. use the new functionality with advanced expressions for view items - you need to assign them to each scheme.

Thinking a bit visionaire, I could think of a view scheme management that allows me to assign pre-defined view sets to the current view. A view set would consist of 2 areas:

 - field view (currently called view + sorting options)
 - filter view (currently called view scheme - upper section)

This view set could be saved and applied by right-clicking and choosing one of the saved view sets.

A third area are the view rules (step 4 in view schemes - selection criteria) - these complex filters could be saved separately and be assigned to an view scheme tree item.

Maybe this goes to far - or not even far enough. It's only a thought...
