Tried to install MC 10.173 on WIN XP Professional. The installation starts, but then, without any comment, stops and nothing happens. Can anybody help, please?

By the way: the same happens with MC 11 latest release. I'm quite shure it has nothing to do with MC itself, but maybe some WIN XP users can help.

The only popup blocker I have running is the one from Internet Explorer. I switched it off, but the problem is still there.

I also deinstalled MC and tried to install it again, but the problem is still there. Also installing WIN XP again didn't help.

I also switched off the windows firewall and the antivirus software during the installation, no success.

Are you logged in as a user with administrative priviledges when you try to install MC? Also, make sure that you have downloaded the build without using a download manager... it has been reported previously that sometimes the installer could get corrupted.

Yes, I am logged in as admin when I try to install MC. I never changed the priviledges, so I guess I still have all when I'm logging in as administrator.

I'm not quite shure whether WIN XP uses a download manager, but when I start  the download (by clicking the link on the MC-homepage) WIN XP tells me that the download has been stopped due to security reasons. After I confirm the message the download finally starts.

What makes me wonder is that after the initial installation of WIN XP the installation of MC caused no problems at all. The problems started first when I tried to install the update 10.0.173. After that WIN XP reported an error with the windows installer and since then the mp3 encoder didn't work (with this update also a new encoder was included), and MC couldn't install anymore .

Some buggy spyware blockers can cause this.   Spyware apps insert themselves into every process, causing unexpected bugs even in perfectly safe software like MC.

I have no additional spyware blocker running. Only the firewall of WIN XP, additional antivirus software and the automatic software update utility of WIN XP (this is what rthe WIN XP security center tells me).

I tried an installation switching off everything mentioned above, but still the same bug.

One solution is to use WinRAR (rarlabs.com) to unpack the install EXE file.  Then run "InstallWizard.exe" to install MC.

Let us know what you find, and sorry for the hassles.

I suspect you had a corrupt download.

I installed MC 10.173 on xp pro +sp2 and it installed uneventfully.

I never use the web link instead preferring to go the ftp route. For some reason ftp can handle big files better than http.

just go to your windows TEMP folder and find the abandoned RarSFX0 (or 1 or 2 ...) folder and run the InstallWizard.exe from there.  you will have to figure out where the TEMP folder is on your Windows setup (usually "Documents and Settings\<username>\Applicaton Data\Local Settings\Temp").

that seems to be a out of the way to just install a program

I think Matt has a better idea, just cut direct to the problem and get rid of it.

this just came to mind:

there was a problem once with plug-ins, due to the Internet explorer temp files that need to be deleted. so if yougo to internet explorer and delete the temp files under options this may correct another problem. (maybe nothing to do with this users) but who knows.

Quick Tip:  In Explorer's address bar, just type "%TMP%" (no quotes, of course) and it will take you right there.

@matt: the solution with winrar was succeessful. unpacking and installing MC with the installer file worked out perfect without any problems. thank you for your support. the days without MC where grey (even though we had some sunny days here in South Germany) ... but now they are over.
