Filenames & Tags: Noob
« on: January 02, 2005, 01:59:36 pm »

I've ripped my cd's to hdd in .APE Format, got all my filenames and albumart.

So far so good.

I've added 2 "fields" to the library

   "Genre Sub" & Genre Front"

I would like these additional two "fields" to be "permanent".

Either as part of the filename or as a tag:

So which do I want, as part of filename or as a tag?

And depending on which, what setting do I use under:

   Tools-Options-Tree&View-Configure Library Field-Catagory:

To make these additional fields either a tag or a part of the filename.

I've fooled around with the seetings alot and looked around alot and still havent got this figured out.

Yes I think I am an idiot!

Thanks for any help

Filenames are pretty useless, as metadata goes.  (Fixed sort order; fixed total length; no standard parser; searching is not indexed [slow]...)  Use tags.

What are you thoughts on the way these filenames look when you share these files with friends, for example. I mean band_name_-_album_name_-_no_-_song_title looks so much better to me and is so much more informative than the likes of [Track#] - Song Title which is what we often get with MC. I know the ID3 tags contain more info, and that's good for those of us fortunate enough to have iPods, but what about those who will stick my shared Mp3 in their music folder, and never be able to recognise what the band is just by looking at it in the folders?

Thoughts?

You can use: library tools/"rename files from properties".

Thanks Guys

EDIT: I've tried save in filename checkbox and update filnames from library, but neither "sticks"

You were posting while I  wrote the following

-----------------------------------------------------------

Hate to sound as dense as I am.

But what is the setting/method to turn your entries/library fields into tags that other programs recognize.

I know Im missing something basic here, but MC is the first computer based Music'ing Ive done, dont know for taggin'.

And depending on which, what setting do I use under:

   Tools-Options-Tree&View-Configure Library Field-Catagory:

To make these additional fields either a tag
or a part of the filename.

THanks Again

Yep Marko THanks

"Only MC will be able to read these custom tags."

MC is just so well respected and does so much"

I just couldn't believe (or didnt want to :)) believe that my MC tags cant be used by other programs!

The only other music program I want to use is Meedio (when using Meedio), and I do use the MC - Meedio plugin (very cool), and MC with a remote, when the TV isnt on.

But with all the changes, updates, fixes to Meedio, Theme Files and MC-Meedio plugin, Seems like it would just be easier to use the Meedio Music Player if it would read the additional tags, instead of changing screen files and keeping the MC plugin in sync with Meedio and Meedio-MC all the time.

Oh well, not a big deal!

THanks For All!

I'm sure from that I can figuout what and why MC is upto and learn what ?I need!

Thanks for "hanging with my questions"
