Feature Request: Automatic creation of folder.jpg
« on: January 09, 2005, 10:42:38 pm »

I know that people have requested this feature before but I'm not sure I've heard an official position on this issue.

All we need is some method in the UI to generate a folder.jpg file using the image associated with, or stored in the tag of, the first music file in a folder.

Thanks,

- Narendra

KingSparta's plug-in may achieve what you are looking to do.  (I don't know... I've never used it, so I don't know exactly what it does.)

Check out this thread:  Plug-In Move Cover Art To Folder.jpg

Why people want cover art files named as "folder.jpg"? In MC it has no advantage over the descriptive filenames. I would hate to have thousands of identically named files on my PCs. It is against what I have learned about keeping my file systems in order.

I guess that Windows Media Player needs files named like that. I'd like to ask: So what? I will never turn to WMP user and this "folder.jpg" thing is one more reason for that.

But, it makes little difference if I am creating a good directory structure based on the artist and album name. I have all my cover art in their respective folders named as folder.jpg.

Call it laziness!

It's probably because Windows (and I mean the OS, not just WMP) considers folder.jpg a system (or "special") file, and if they exist, Windows Explorer can display your library in thumbnail mode.

MC11, great as it is, may not be the only program people use to handle their media files.  That it CAN do a better job doesn't mean it's something people should get stuck using.  Things like making disc labels and other playlist managing tools often make use of a folder.jpg file for album artwork.   If MC can get the image and write it that's one less bit of frustration the users will have to put up with.  That may also help 'buy time' for MC in improving the features that are current found in other programs.  It's a win-win for everyone.  The users get the files they need and MC gets seen as the premier tool for enabling user success with other programs too!
