Handheld doesn't show in options
« on: January 14, 2005, 11:07:55 pm »

I'm trying to use a portable drive or folder as a handheld device, but the Handheld item is not showing up in Options at all. The default pluging is installed (that is, I haven't installed any additional plugins, but the Portable Drives (9.0.126) plugin is already installed).

How can I make the Handheld item appear in Tools->Options?

This is MC 10.0.173.

Thanks.

You can't.

As far as I know using a folder as handheld is not possible in MC 10. You have to use MC 11 for this to work.

In MC10, under Options --> Devices, you can enable support for WMDM-players.

Well, I admit the instructions on how to do it are not very clear, but the help does say:

Media Center currently supports the following players:

Rio 300, Rio 500, Rio 600, Rio 800, Rio 900, Rio S10, Rio S30, Rio S35, Rio S50, Nike, Rio One
Archos Jukebox 10, Archos Jukebox 15, Archos Jukebox 20,
Nomad/ Nomad II, Nomad Jukebox, Nomad Zen, Nomad MuVo,
MPIO, Yepp 20 Series, Compaq PA-1, iRock 500, iPod,
PDA  and any players that appear as removable drives within Windows, including Sony Clie, iRock,Iomega HipZip,etc)

I assumed that meant I should be able to use a folder, or at least a standard removable USB drive.

Is the help description wrong or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Not all removable drives are equal ...

For a removable drive that is not WMDM-compatible (like most removable USB-harddisks and a lot of MP3 hard-disk jukeboxes) to work with MC10 it has to know it's volume-label.
Look up the volume-label of your removable drive and copy it's name under Tools-->Plugin-Manager-->Handheld-->Portable drives-->Configure. Press OK and Exit. Then press F5 to rescan all devices. Now MC10 can recognize your drive by it's label and displays it as a handheld with the drive-letter (i.e. H:) under Drives & Devices.  If you do this for the first time, MC builts a database of all the files on the drive.
Folders are not drives and have no volume-labels. You have to use MC11 to use folders as drives.

Thanks for the explanation. I tried it and couldn't get it to work, but I did install MC11 and that's working so I'm not going to spend any more time playing with 10. I'm glad this functionality's been added to 11, though, good timing for me to start using MC.
