YADB Problems - Unable to connect
« on: October 18, 2002, 05:52:30 am »

Hi Guys,

I've been reading through the forum and have seen many mentions of CDDB and the fact that people were haveing problems with connecting ..... and that MJ no longer uses it etc.  However, cant find any posts where people have been having trouble with YADB.

I cant connect to YADB ..... I have it selected in options as the CD Info Database, but when I put in a CD to rip, and click update from Database I get an error box:

Action: Failed
Status: Failed to connect to YADB server

Can anyone suggest anything to help this? I have Easy CD-DA on my machine as well, it uses FreeDB with no problems so I'm a bit stuck on this.

As some extra info - I cant connect to ANYTHING web based through MJ ...... for example if I click on "Check for updates" I get an error box saying "Failed to connect to a server" ...... if I try to download plugins I get the same error.

Please help ... am on pathetic 56K dial up connection for now .... and:

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2191 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 382 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1  (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2600.0000
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2600.0000
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

Thanks for any help

Does IE work?  The problem could be an incorrect proxy server setting in IE.

As far as I can tell, IE is working fine .... I can browse and download happily.

Could it be anything to do with me being on dial-up? does MJ try to kick anything off when you boot up and therefore prior to me connecting to my ISP? .... clutching at straws here and to lazy to write in track info!

What happens when you enter www.yadb.com in your browser?

Are you running a firewall or a proxy?
Have you changed your security settings for IE?

Thanks,

Do the following:

See if you can isolate problem to MJ.

Are u familiar with EAC? It uses FreeDB (YADB's dad). See if u can pull up CD info with it. If so then there's something funky with MJ. If not then u have a some kind of a internet setup problem.

Hi guys,

OK:

1. When I put www.yadb.com into my browser it opens up fine.

2. I'm not running a firewall or a proxy - just whatever my ISP is using .... and I have encountered no problems with downloading anything else.

3. I dont believe I've changed any IE security settings - they are just default.

4. I also have Easy CD-DA ripper installed and it connects to FreeDB with no problems!?

So whats freaky!? .... its me isn't it .... I'm the FREAK!!!!

Hi Adamski,

At a guess, I think it is the ISP who is freaky.

In your browser, try:

http://www.yadb.com/cgi-bin/cgi-lookup.cgi?hash=1024325396&offsets=182,12875,25372,35950,48407,59892,74700,89075,109555,122030,137175,153500,168182,179632,193057,204110,216537,227965,242525,254790

If this works (you'll see XML code, a bunch of <> with data), call your ISP and find out what firewall/proxy they are using. Also let me know whether it works or not.

Hi John,

I put that address in my browser and it brought up the following - track info for a pretty darn sad little album ..... hope this isn't your taste in music buddy :D

Various 3577 Shakin' Stevens 1 Bay City Rollers 2 The New Seekers 3 The Tremeloes 4 Alvin Stardust 5 Jimmy and the Rackets 6 Shakin' Stevens 7 Bay City Rollers 8 The Tremeloes 9 Jimmy and the Rackets 10 Bay City Rollers 11 The New Seekers 12 Shakin' Stevens 13 Alvin Stardust 14 Jimmy and the Rackets 15 The Tremeloes 16 Bay City Rollers 17 Shakin' Stevens 18 Alvin Stardust 19 Jimmy and the Rackets 20

Can't call my ISP coz its too late over here in the UK and the Customer Frustration team will all be in or en route to the pub.

The burning questions I have are ...
1.How come Freedb works in the other ripper I have??

2. How do I get into the settings in MJ to configure the connection to YADB?? all I can see is a check box to enable using YADB ... nothing actually about setting that link up.

Cheers

Hi Adamski,

I have no idea where that CD came from, it is just one I use for testing.
(You believe that, right?)

Explanation of what is happening (rather technical):  the web runs on the http protocol. http messages are a head and a body. When you look up a web page, you send a message with a head that tells what page you want, and no body. You get back a message with a head that says different things about the web page, and a body which is the html  text of the page.

To lookup a CD, the same thing happens (exchanging messages) except Media Jukebox writes the head information instead of your browser. We might do it a little different, and I'm guessing that the ISP has a firewall/proxy in place that notices this difference and drops the message.

I'd really like to find out what this difference is.

Thanks,

j

OK now we're rockin and rollin!!!!

Feeling like a bit of a thingy but anyway - just had to disable a proxy setting thing that was hiding away from me ..... couldn't see the wood for the trees!

This seems to have solved all my problems of connecting to anything through MJ! Atleast now I'll be able to help the next newbie that starts whingeing!!

Thanks for the help and patience .... hey its 6:00 pm here - a perfectly respectable time for a beer!  :D

So it was a proxy setting, correct?

Glad you  got it fixed, and enjoy your beer.

Hi,
I've just installed MJ & seem to have the same problem as that described. I've checked for proxy settings on my PC & there arnt any (Under Internet options/Connections/Settings). I get the same error on 2 PC's it's set up on. When I put the long line through the browser I get the same reply as noted.

When the software tries to connect to the server, it actually comes back with...
The page cannot be displayed
There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.

Please try the following:

Open the www.allmusic.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
Click the  Refresh button, or try again later.

Click  Search to look for information on the Internet.
You can also see a list of related sites.

..... in an IE window.

I presume there is no need to setup any settings for the database (unlike with CDDB).

Any ideas?

No setup is needed for the database.
Are both PCs on the same network?
Are they behind a firewall?
Are they behind a proxy server?
Some proxy servers are invisible - they do not appear in the browser settings.
