2 iPods on one system - another question
« on: February 07, 2005, 10:23:40 pm »

I'm back.
It seems as if everything is synching OK now, however, I'm not sure if MC can differentiate between the 3G iPod and the 4G iPod. I've been synching my 3G for a while, and I just hooked up my 4G iPod, and MC was once again showing conflicting information about just how much data was on the iPod. So I initiated the sync, and MC proceeded to delete everything off of the 4G (I'm assuming because it thought it was the 3G, who's contents are different) and then sync everything back onto it. That's not very efficient.
My question is this: Can MC keep track of two different portables, or does is just see both iPods as one?

benrad,

This has not been fully implemented. If you work with one iPod and then close MC and restart MC and connect the other, all will be well. This needs to be revised to handle your situation cleanly.

Do I need to reset the devices within MC too?

Thanks.

Ben,

No, simply closing and reopening should do it.

I'm sorry Steve, but that just doesn't work.
I attached the 4G iPod tonight (using build 93), and I tried to synchronize a 15 GB playlist. It reported the list as being 4 gigs over the limit. If I have it set to synchronize, and "delete unselected files during..." then in a rational world, synching a 15 GB playlist to a 20 GB hard drive would make sense. It doesn't work. Another 2 hours wasted.

Also, for the last couple builds...
If I eject one iPod, close down MC, then attach the other iPod, and open MC, I get the analyzing devices message, and no activity for about 5 minutes. I've tried resetting the devices, with no luck.

Ben,

Please get build 196 and try again. Changes were made to assist your situation with two iPods and disconnects.

Finally got around to trying this.

Upon connecting the 4G iPod I get the blank warning dialog whenever I try to browse the handheld. I disconnected the iPod, reset devices in MC, and then tried again. Same thing.

Ben,

and clicking on iPod in the tree I assume??

That usually occurs when the database is corrupt.  Try deleting the iTunesDB file and then rebuild the database from within MC.

OK, but seriously, my girlfriend is going to break up with me soon if this continues.   ;)

I hope it does not come to that ;)

Anyway, if you can, think about what you may have done or what might have happened in between the reconnect that may have corrupted the database.

Honestly, I sync it for her, and she uses it as one normally would until she needs me to put new stuff on it. It never comes in contact with another system. The only thing that I did in between was sync my 3G iPod, which would obviously have no affect on hers (I assume).

Is she ever connecting it to any other PCs (especially one with iTunes or another iPod supporting application)?

Nope.

I've stopped using MC11 with the iPods until I can be sure it's safe to use 2 iPods on it.  If we were just a 1 iPod family, I'd be happy using MC, but it's too much of a gamble right now. Has anyone else had any luck with 2 iPods on the same copy of MC?

Actually, I did notice that when I first went back to use iTunes, her "Playcount" db file on the iPod was corrupt and I had to delete it.

If anyone else is using two iPods, can you please update this thread if things are working (or not working)?

Thanks,

I synched two iPods after having only been using one for a long time.

Synched A -- settings from previous A synch were remembered.

Synched B -- settings from A still there

Synched B -- settings from last synch (B) there.

i.e. it does not distinquish one iPod from the other.  they are "named" differently, but it does not keep two sets of settings.  This was with v. 213 I think.

EDIT v. 211 is what i have now.

RobOK,
MC never distinguished one iPod from the other for me...I don't think that was an option. That's one of the reasons I'm sticking  to iTunes. I'm not sure if this was ever really a feature in MC10. The problems I've been having relate to corruption between synching a 3G iPod and a 4G iPod.

SteveG -- can you describe what SHOULD we be seeing.  i.e. -- should MC be able to save two sets of settings for two iPods or not?  I think I misinterpreted an earlier post to think that MC would be doing this.

thanks!

Rob,

MC should be able to handle two iPods connected at the same time.
Beginning with the next build of MC, MC should remember settings for individual devices except for the playlist selections. This last feature needs to be implemented yet.

Are you planning to add this feature to MC?

That will be great.... should we look for that in one of the upcoming builds or is that further off or what?  I have a 10 Gig and a 40 Gig so have two sets of playlists is key.

thanks!
