"Convert Format" Monkey's APL to Lossless WMA
« on: February 12, 2005, 11:32:22 am »

I'm trying to figure out whether I'll be able to buy a portable "MP3" player. I've ripped my entire CD collection into single WAV files, compressed with Monkey's Audio and accessed by Media Jukebox with Monkey's Audio APL files. Since I have over 4,800 songs done this way, redoing the entire collection to accomodate a portable player is out of the question.

I've figured out how to use the "Convert Format" option to create 192Kbps WMA files on another hard drive by selecting any number of songs and selecting "Convert Format." A few options later and my Media Jukebox database isn't changed and the original files remain. All is good from that stand point. But ... is it possible to convert to WMA lossless in Media Jukebox using this method? I don't see an option for this. If not, can Media Center handle this conversion?

If Media Center is my only option, does anyone know if the Media Jukebox Girder commands are the same as the Girder commands for Media Center?

MC can convert APE to WMA.

Please check the Girder site for compatibility questions:

It is not working in MJ8 since the format is newer than the program.

I just tested it for you. MC11 converted APE+APL files to lossless (and gapless) WMA files flawlessly. Also all tags were converted. Some MC specific tags are of course not showing up in WMP10, but the basic ones are OK.

This is my opinion about upgrading from MJ8 to MC11: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26005.msg180255#msg180255

Thanks for your help! That's certainly good to hear. I'll be able to use Monkey's Audio for my media room and convert my entire collection to WMA lossless for the portable player ... and possibly a Roku SoundBridge ... with only a few clicks! ... ;D

One more question ... where do I upgrade to MC 11? I only see MC 10 on the purchase page.

It is on this thread (until the next build comes out): http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25990.0

You will have a try-out period and if you like to buy it you can start the process from inside the program.

There are some things I must warn you about:

- MJ8 and MC11 cannot coexist on the same PC. You will have registry problems.
- MC11 library is not backwards compatible and you must reanalyze your files if you like to use Replay Gain. These things changed already in MC9.

I had no problems in bringing MJ8 library to MC9, but I am sorry to say that I don't remember anymore how I did it. It was over two years ago. You could just try to import an MJ8 library backup to MC11. A forum search here might also help.

Thanks again!

I hate to admit it but I haven't really dug into MJ8 features. If it's just a matter of removing MJ8 and installing MC11, that's fine. I've rebuilt the PC numerous times and have always just run the "Import Media" feature.

In that case it will be easy for you, but perhaps it's time to start digging.

MC is good for basic playback, but the build in library has more to offer. A library backup that takes only a few seconds is all what is needed to preserve the library data from an installation to another.
