Help of German linguists needed for translation!
« on: July 12, 2004, 10:25:38 am »

Hi, whoever is a German speaking user of MC.

I started to translate the language.txt into German and a lot of the strings that can be translated have already been translated such as Menus, Action Window and many buttons. But not everything can be translated at the moment. Matt is working on it.

Now I need your help. Some terms are very MC specific and the literal translation might not be the best one, so I would like to get some creative input from you. Many strings I just looked up at WMP9 to see how they did it.

Let's start:

Playing Now!
Literally: Aktuelle Wiedergabeliste
Current choice: Am Spielen!
Alternative: Jetzt am Spielen!

Play
Literally and WMP: Wiedergabe
Current choice: Abspielen
Alternative: Spielen

Playlist
Literally and WMP: Wiedergabeliste
Current choice: Abspielliste
Alternative: Spielliste

Smartlist
Difficult to translate
Current choice: Smartliste

Tag
Difficult to translate
Current choice: Tag
Pretty bad alternatives: Attribut, Kennzeichen, Feld

Track
Literal and WMP: Titel
Current choice: Titel
Alternative: Spur (only good for audio tracks)

So, if you have better choices for those words, please post them here. Thank you!

Well - I am no linguist, but I think the following would be appropriate:

Playing Now!
Choose 'Aktuelle Wiedergabeliste' - it is not that enthusiastic :P as 'playing now' but all the way better than 'Am Spielen!' which would give you bad rates in a german class for style...

Playlist
'Wiedergabeliste' for the same reason and with the same restriction as above ...

Smartlist
just use this word as there is no alternative in german. All the german words that you can find for translation either have the wrong connotations or are simply too unelegant (and as a note for any language purist: 'smartlist' - afaik - is neither an english word - it is just an artificial construction in place of ' a list that helps you choose and sort in a smart way...')

Tag
same as above - if you want to use a german word (nearly no german would use a german word here anyway), pick 'Kennzeichen' or 'Markierung'.  Both of them mean "attribute". The first one would be used if you would like to focus on the fact, that the attribute is a main identifier; the second one would give a connotation of 'somebody marked it, gave the attribute'. It is a hint and reference to the fact that 'attributing something' could mean 'leave ones mark', or indicating possession. (You could btw. write a whole book about the facettes and meanings of the different german words that could be used to translate 'tag').  ;D

With the other choices, I would agree...

Sorry for the long one...

I have a couple of comments:

Isn't the word "Play" internationally accepted? Does anyone not know what "play" means today? While "wiedergabe" is certainly more pure, isn't the use of the word "play" as in "Playliste, etc." more practical?

My other comment: if you're going to use "Titel" for "track", then shouldn't "name" be "Name" not also "Titel"? Actually, I don't see why you can't use "Spur" for "track" and "Titel" for "name".

I think i will keep my english version. I'm afraid, i do not understand or misunderstand some german terms because the englich expressions are more popular.
Please keep CD as CD don' t use KS (kompakte Scheibe) ;)

When I did my original translation I simply looked over how it was translated in Windows Media Player and just took their equivalent terms. Some I must say are not really nice as you mention here like "Wiedergabe", but I think it is more important to adhere to some translation standard than have our own prefered terms. You can always do that as the file is at present not compiled and can be edited to your own taste.

Some terms are quite new like 'tag' and there is no established translation in German, so in some case I prefered to use the english original.

Uwe, just wondering where you see the word "KS", can't find it anywhere - CD is simply left as CD!

Bytestar, thanks for refining the translation I will copy your posts to disk and compare it to mine.

The newest translation of the MC11 German text file can be found Here. Just remember to save it in Unicode format.

bytestar,

did a file compare with your postings using Files Comparer 2.6 and accepted most of your suggestions.

What I did not accept was the word "Informationen". Although many people use it nowadays without further thinking, this word has no plural in German as it is a so called collective noun which includes a plural in itself (similar to the english word "sheep"). I think the abbreviation "Info" should be enough here.

If anybody has further suggestions, please post only differences here and not the whole file.

Still waiting that J River makes comprehensive changes to MC11 so that all english text strings of the product will be available for translation.

Thanks for all the effort everyone.

Maybe you could create a new thread listing the major areas that still need translation. (exact control style (i.e. tree, checkbox, etc.) if possible)  Some may be easy to address in a coming build.

Thanks again.

The big missing chunk is the Options tree!

On the other hand without a complete list of text strings it is almost impossible to produce a complete translation. One would have to access every single feature and every single error message to discover all text strings, an almost impossible task!

In my case I do not use a handheld player, so there is no way to discover what strings are showing up in that function.

Stupid question, but where do I find this German language file ?

BTW: Agree that Play is an accepted term also in German, no need to translate. I would even argue that Playing Now should stay. Its much better anyway then "Aktuelle Wiedergabe" or similar.

German is sometimes just such a clumsy language !!

Sorry, but was that that mean, must be saved as Unicode ?  How do I save in Unicaode?

Also: where do I have to save the file? in the MC11 core directory?  Does it require any special name to be saved as ??

Many thanks

I am really surprised that Translations are not avail on a grater degree since this was one of the projects in mc9.

I would figure that the language files could be downloaded like a plug-in to be installed.

this seems to be a server error, i packed the file in a zip, so it gets transferred correctly.  :D  it would be better if the language file could be uploaded to J-RIVER SOMWHERE, but it seems like they dont really care about a german translation  ?

We do care, but we're doing a lot of things already.

You might be able to package it in an mjp file.  See the MC Package File info on the devzone page:

If anyone else tries this, you can remove the customization by deleting or renaming this file:
C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Data\Custom Resources\Language.txt

If someone else wants to build another MJP file, here's what this one looks like:

[Package]
Name=German Language
Action=UNZIPDIR
Version=1.0.0.0
Url=http://www.netcologne.de/[location of file]
[Action]
File1=*.*
File1Action1=COPY_INSTALLDIR
File2=install.cmd
File2Action1=RUN
