T,O: Peeve, Pet, Day, of the
« on: February 14, 2005, 11:13:17 pm »

This new fad of renaming artists is really starting to annoy me. Since as far back as I can remember, artists names had always been treated as "group" names. Carly Simon not Simon, Carly (filed under C not S).etc. I've noticed that one of the local music stores has recently made this change too.

Today I've been ripping a bunch of TimeLife Songs Of The Seventies CDs and from YADB, for one track I get: Mockingbird by Simon, Carly and James Taylor. Another one: I've Got to Use My Immagination by Knight, Gladys and The Pips! It's not The Pips and it's not Gladys Knight. It's GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS. It's a GROUP! File it under "G".

I've asked several artists/bands and to a person, they all preferred the old way. One said, he sure would not want to see his band's name on a marqee like: "Tonight Live On Stage: Shepard, Kenny Wayne". Or how about: Dog, Snoop?

Just my humble opinion, Jay.

I personally prefer it the way you don't!!

Big deal, with a snappy tool like Media Center to assist, it's a cinch to rename the entries to match your personal preference.

That way, everyone's happy...

My cents 2

If you want to keep it in your own library that way, that's fine. But when people change the CD info and then submit that to Yadb, then it has to be changed back and thats a lot of extra work for me.

I don't believe the CD manufacturers have changed to this last name first system yet. I tried several of these offending CDs with CDDB and they all show  the "old" system.

Yeah I guess yer right about submitting to music DBs...but like I said it seems a fairly trivial exercise to go thru em and retag to suit your personal prefs.

The CD's might show the "old" system, but how do you file yer CD's on their shelves?

I used to file em in artist order by band or individuals surname...

Do you file em by first name?

As I said, I treat an artist's name as a "group" name. This is how  record stores and radio stations used to file the records. This is how the info is on the CDs - they're not labeled "surname, first name". I go looking for Paul simon not Simon, paul.

To me it keeps things consistent, otherwise logically, you should change Bachman Turner Overdrive to Turner, Bachman Overdrive or something.

I agree with leaving the names alone.
I'm not in the military, so why file things like I am?

Doe, John, Private, Marine

As for it being simple to retag things, that is in the eye of the beholder.

I no longer use freedb because of the lousy data that then has to be checked and changed.
To me, it is easier to just get the data myself and create tags.
Most sources do not have all the data I want anyway, so why bother with tagging from here, there, a third place then changing things to be what I want?

Perhaps we can all convert to the Dewey Decimal System.

Or should that be System, Decimal, Dewey?

Hmmm...  I didn't used to agree with modelmaker's position, but having thought about it for five seconds or so, with only one pot of coffee working its way through my sleep-deprived system, I agree.

Imagine the artist named "John Bigshot".  Put his CDs under "B" for "Bigshot".  Now, let's say this artist starts working under the name "John Bigshot and the Stupid Users".  Where will you find the CDs then?  Under "B", still?  Or under "S"?

Put it under "J", as a group name (as modelmaker describes), and it's simple no matter what.  It's also consistent across all artists, even if John Bigshot turns down the idea to start tacking on the moniker "Stupid Users".

So yeah, I think it would inarguably (yes, inarguably) be simpler if all artists were filed by first letter.  The one exception to this should be those who begin with "The".  You couldn't file all "The..." artists under "T", because then you'd have 4,000,000 artists under "The...", which would be a pain.

Even then, they'd still be in alpha order under "The" and easy to find.
